Experimental music should be something that suggests a way of organizing your thinking, your attitude toward the world, which suggests that the world could be different.

Beautiful, if you have a taste for baroque violin (here, Biber), and Guy's virtuosic approach to the bull fiddle.Dohol wrote:Jesse wrote:

Re: Now Playing
I've been listening to this for the last month or so.....there are times when I'll leave this on auto-repeat due to its shorter length......very strong record...could it be I'll be changing my contender for a record of the year????jon abbey wrote:
Pax Nicholas and the Nettey Family-Na Teef Know De Road of Teef (Daptone)
my first listen, to see if the music is as good as the story behind the record:
"Convinced of his skills as a drummer and singer, in 1971 Fela Anikulapo Kuti made Nicholas Addo-Nettey a full member of Africa 70 on congas and backing vocals. While playing with Fela and recording on all his releases between 1971 and 1978, Nicholas always had his own thing going on the side. He released two solo LPs for the Tabansi Label with the Martin Brothers Band from Portharcort, Nigeria: Mind Your Own Business in 1971 and Na Teef Know De Road Of Teef in 1973. Na Teef... is a heavy afrofunk set, recorded with Africa 70 musicians and singers in Ginger Baker's highly equipped Lagos studio, where many of Fela's albums were also set to tape. Fela was not amused when he heard how strong the album was, reportedly telling Addo-Nettey "Don't you ever, EVER play it again!". And so it was; despite being a killer record, Na Teef… remained undercover for more than 30 years. The story would have ended there had it not been for Frank Gossner, a true vinyl digger who found a copy somewhere in West Africa, tracked down Nicholas in Berlin, and brought the album to the attention of Daptone Records."

Re: Now Playing
well, it's from 1973, that disqualifies it in my book to begin with. past that, I thought the music was very good, up there with prime-era Fela (as of course it should be, as it's the same musicians), but the singing I found jarring every time, that was when I missed Fela.Salty Swift wrote:I've been listening to this for the last month or so.....there are times when I'll leave this on auto-repeat due to its shorter length......very strong record...could it be I'll be changing my contender for a record of the year????

Geezz.....that's an odd way of looking at things? Since when can't a record made in 1973 not qualify to be a record of the year? Have you heard it back then? Last year? Decade ago? Neither have I!jon abbey wrote:well, it's from 1973, that disqualifies it in my book to begin with. past that, I thought the music was very good, up there with prime-era Fela (as of course it should be, as it's the same musicians), but the singing I found jarring every time, that was when I missed Fela.Salty Swift wrote:I've been listening to this for the last month or so.....there are times when I'll leave this on auto-repeat due to its shorter length......very strong record...could it be I'll be changing my contender for a record of the year????
So, as far as the world is concerned this is NEW music.

yep, that's the same rationale that allows unreleased Coltrane and Monk records be named the best jazz records of the year decades after they're dead. I think it's absurd.Salty Swift wrote:Geezz.....that's an odd way of looking at things? Since when can't a record made in 1973 not qualify to be a record of the year? Have you heard it back then? Re: Now Playing
Depends how you define "Record Of The Year".. Which reminds me, The Wire will be knocking on my door in less than a couple of months asking for mine. I think that's absurd.
