I really, vehemently, disagree here. There is nothing 'bad' about John Waters' early films. They are cheap, to be sure. They are lurid, nasty and tacky. But considering the resources he had available, those early films, particularly Female Trouble and Pink Flamingos, are undeniably good, for me.Dan Warburton wrote:Yeah, well I've been confused about this thread all the way along.. Not enough to get hung up on them here. The 'lacking' quality of all those factors can be put down to lack of resources where Waters is concerned. 'So bad it's good' movies, for me, tend to have a certain 'cluelessness' about them, whereas Waters' films know exactly what they're about.Dan Warburton wrote:

Not that I'm an expert on John Waters, but I doubt he'd object to having his films in the same "camp" as Andy Warhol's Frankenstein. "Bad," another one with Warhol's name attached to it, has an incredible amount of parallels to Waters' movies. He wanted to make trashy movies!jpeatt wrote:

There's an interesting little making of on the extras for the dvd I just watched of this a few weeks back. The original script was written about an ex-Israeli special services guy who gets forced back into action, and was intended to be a more Deerhunter/ First Blood type affair. The studio who had the rights to it at the time were looking for an Arnie vehicle, and there you have it.

I think many people see Tommy during his interaction with the audience and can not understand the feelings they have. Rather than examine these feelings they simply decide that he is "pompous" or "arrogant" because they feel he is unapproachable. It makes sense. Here is a man who has everything many would dream of in Hollywood....
In light of all this I think people feel inferior to Tommy. He has everything they cannot...He is actually very approachable and a wonderful guy.
