Man Hell Comes to Frogtown is brilliant, I tells you brilliant! Rowdy, Roddy Piper at his "best".
Rowdy Roddy had a far more stellar film career than Hulk Hogan.

'They Live' is also killer, but doesn't really belong in this thread.

IMDB tells me the sequel is to be avoided at all costs, fwiw, but I've not seen it either.

Probably the worst acting I've ever seen. A script written in broken English by an Italian, and then performed in broken English by American actors. Goblins living in Nilbog. Incredible.

Yeah, Troll 2 is fantastic! I think you can find a dvd of both Troll and Troll 2 in the US. You can't go wrong with that.

As for those who love Commando, here's another equally (possibly horrendously better) film in the same vein:

Image

Mcbain

Dir. James Glickenhaus (1991)

I was lucky enough to catch a very late night showing of this on some tv station a while ago, not knowing what I was watching and instantly loving it. It took Odd Obsessions in Chicago to know about it and actually have a copy of the film. Quite possibly the film to end all films-- McBain centers on a ragtag group of Vietnam veterans lead by Mcbain who decide to take on not just a crime syndicate or drug cartel but the entire government of Columbia! Suffice it to say it's filled with numerous deadpan one-liners delivered by the inestimable Christopher Walken ( McBain) and Co. as they off large numbers of unlucky Columbian soldiers with remarkable ease. Undoubtedly, Mcbain has some of the most incredibly stupid and great action scenes ever, all delivered in this incredibly wide eyed, "look at that explosion" gratuity that only films produced by studios like Carloco excelled at. But the main show is of course Walken, who while pratically sleep walking through each scene, still manages to deliver the goods, popping out behind flaming, over turned trucks to squeeze off a few one-handed uzi shots or crash through floors to surprise a Columbian dictator the floor below. Yeah, it's great.

When I first saw Pink Flamingos it was at a midnight showing at the Eastown Theater...1980, a midnight showing....I tore a rib cartilage laughing..

Dan Warburton wrote:Yeah, well I've been confused about this thread all the way along.. We're talking so-bad-it's-good, right? Pink Flamingos is just plain bad most of the time. Female Trouble's more fun, but for me Waters hit his stride with Desperate Living and Polyester wins the Golden Dog Turd award.
I really, vehemently, disagree here. There is nothing 'bad' about John Waters' early films. They are cheap, to be sure. They are lurid, nasty and tacky. But considering the resources he had available, those early films, particularly Female Trouble and Pink Flamingos, are undeniably good, for me.

They are well constructed in that they follow their plots comprehensibly, they have a consistent aesthetic, etc etc. I think there is an fascinating arc that runs through Waters' work from Multiple Maniacs to Hairspray of someone setting up a position for themselves as an outcast, examines the position they end up in, then willingly traves back into the mainstream.

So while the thread is, as far as I'm concerned, about so bad it's good, I really don't think these films belong here, and it's a bit of a pet peeve of mine when they get clusteredd in among either that camp (no pun intended - oh, who am I kidding) or the grossout comedy world - which I think they have something in common with, but don't really belong with either.

Sorry for the rant, Jpeatt feels very strongly about this topic, and believes that these films represent one of the most significant bodies of work in the history of cinema.

Anyway, here's the trailer for 'the Apple'.

As I said, he got better from Female Trouble onwards for me (and then start going downhill with Serial Mom). I haven't seen Eat Your Makeup or any of the other pre-Flamingos pics, but would like to. Anyway, depends what you mean by "bad", doesn't it? Does acting, image quality and editing matter to you?
Not enough to get hung up on them here. The 'lacking' quality of all those factors can be put down to lack of resources where Waters is concerned. 'So bad it's good' movies, for me, tend to have a certain 'cluelessness' about them, whereas Waters' films know exactly what they're about.

Third person is for serious real talk only.

Not that I'm an expert on John Waters, but I doubt he'd object to having his films in the same "camp" as Andy Warhol's Frankenstein. "Bad," another one with Warhol's name attached to it, has an incredible amount of parallels to Waters' movies. He wanted to make trashy movies!

I'm surprised to see no mention of Troma movies. Most I know are awfully boring but there are some nuggets. For a comprehensive list see: http://www.troma.com/movies/.

Obviously the unrivalled masterpiece is the original TOXIC AVENGER (1984)!!!

There's an interesting little making of on the extras for the dvd I just watched of this a few weeks back. The original script was written about an ex-Israeli special services guy who gets forced back into action, and was intended to be a more Deerhunter/ First Blood type affair. The studio who had the rights to it at the time were looking for an Arnie vehicle, and there you have it.

is there a backstory behind Predator too? struck me as a film that wanted to be about Vietnam but possibly wasn't made at the time so was relocated.

The Room (dir. Tommy Wiseau)

This film exists in a class of its own... seriously.

Last weekend I sat through about an hour of something I hadn't seen since I was a kid, The Greatest Story Ever Told. Amazing. From Heston as the sexy, strapping Saint John the Baptist to Sal Mineo as the cured cripple. There's something for everybody!

seconded. ive seen bert i. gordon movies that were better than this. they didnt look better, but they were better.

i also have a hunch that this imdb profile is tommy wiseau himself, commenting favorably on his own movies.

http://www.imdb.com/user/ur3656180/comments

edit: looking through the imdb profile for this movie is hilarious. it seems pretty obvious wiseau has used multiple accounts to bump the films rating up. first of all, the vote breakdown shows roughly 5 times as many '10' votes, as '9', '8', '7', and '6' votes combined. pretty fishy! and so many 10-star comments, where this movie is the only movie that user has ever commented on, and the comments being so completely off-base and totally unlike the other, lower rated user comments, as well as being written in the ESL style reminiscent of wiseau. this one is particularly funny:
1337ninjer wrote:I would also like to take a moment to address some comments I have heard about Tommy Wiseau himself....I would like to note that all of these attacks (he is pompous, arrogant, etc.) are patently false.

I think many people see Tommy during his interaction with the audience and can not understand the feelings they have. Rather than examine these feelings they simply decide that he is "pompous" or "arrogant" because they feel he is unapproachable. It makes sense. Here is a man who has everything many would dream of in Hollywood....

In light of all this I think people feel inferior to Tommy. He has everything they cannot...He is actually very approachable and a wonderful guy.
