I saw Marissa Nadler last week. As the performance progressed she seemed to get more and more depressed. Still a good show though.

For 6/6/6 they had Richard Bishop from the Sun City Girls playing at Wall of Sound here(at 6:66 PM of course). I never liked that Salvador Kali CD because I hate flamenco guitar. I've heard enough Ottmar Liebart etc in restaurants and whatnot to last me a lifetime. Still, I wanted to see what's on the what now. And I have to admit that it was pretty fucking great. He played a sort of ragged flamenco if you will, hard chords spicing things up. The pieces were interesting and the last one had some sampled sitar playing and eventually built into this phlanged wall of strumming that was excellent. Great stuff. When he started playing I was thinking that the way this was going I would split early. However I got sucked in, he wasn't really playing flamenco, it was merely a meme that got built out into something the reflected far more than that mere word conveys. After the set I bought two cdr's so it was good enough for me to lay out some bread for.
Best 6/6/6 ever!

saw a few noise bands the other night
burn ward
pedestrian deposit
oscillating innards

BW used his right hand on something i couldn't see, and his left to stomp a bunch of pedals semi-regularly, making a constantly switching chopped-up medium pace. then dropped it all out into a thickish tonal drone for a stretch, and came back with a relatively short section of full saturation... nice structure and not too long.

PD started with a few minutes of a slowly growing, clean, tonal drone, which got decently loud... and then a 2-second blast of choppy digital noise that really sounded like something being fried... really fucking loud and really short, so much so that i'm sure everyone in the place jumped. it took quite a while for people to realize that he was done, at which point he got a real round of applause. awesome set.

OI, i don't remember too much about the structure of his set except that there were some samples of reich/glass-type piano stuff that provided relief/contrast/suspense.. this seemed to be the theme of the night, not only did all three keep me on my toes (which is the very least i can ask for) they were all good. no comment on the other two bands (wilt and bloodyminded)...

ya i caught pd/oi/bw here in dc. they werent advertised as apart of the show, but got added at the last minute, partially due to me telling the booker (a friend) that it would be worthwhile. since there was already 4 other bands, they did 3-5 minute consecutive sets kind of like the way men who can't love perform (tag team style), altogether playing for no longer than 15 minutes. it wasn't seamless, but all three sets were good, pedestrian deposit being my favorite. i guess burn ward was having some issues with his gear and decided the only sensible resolution was to grab his whole setup and slam it onto the floor. actually, all 3 sets ended in a fit of rage (ala prurient), but i'd say pd's seemed the most genuine. anyway, they brought a much needed misanthropic vibe to the lame dance-party indie crowd that night

ok, so i just came back from the guns'n'roses concert. it was good - the only thing that stopped it from being great was the sound quality that was a bit thin. other than that, axl was great and the new band did a fine job (especially robin finck). the best songs were the ones from "appetite for destruction" (they only played 3 or 4 from "use your illusions")... the few new songs they played weren't totally convincing to my ears, though (except maybe for "I.R.S."). they played for 2+ hours and "appetite" was almost played in it's entity. hmm, what else... the pyro-shit was a bit over the top, stuff was constantly exploding and flames everywhere... but yeah, i'm happy, i hope the band is gonna find an own identity (i thought robin finck was the only one who'd be really missed in this new g'n'r incarnation, everyone else is pretty much replaceable) and then... rock on guys.

saw fe-mail for free at the vancouver jazz festival this afternoon. by the end, the audience was about half the size of when I got there, but everyone who stuck around seemed to really enjoy the set. pretty interesting loopy improv, things grew pretty pretty massive, especially when french horn and vocals collided and the theremin got abused.
all these dickbags kept turning around and looking at me with this "can you believe this shit?" look on their faces, and quickly got up and left when they saw that people seemed to actually be enjoying the set. helped my view.

Boredoms. Grog Shop. Cleveland Ohio. June 28.

Opening with EYE's newest invention--a strange appratus consisting of two glowing orbs connected by qurater inch cable to god knows what--shaking and screaming to thunderous cracks and digital warbles. Extremely interesting opening which would eventually turn into a reminder of why I don't much enjoy Seadrum/House of Sun. With EYE as the ringmaster to the surrounding three drumkits, his un-mic'ed screams piercing through the din, he was truly the star of the night--unfotunately, his exuberence could not kill the tedium of a single record sample being slowed and sped up to three in-sync drummers. I looked over to a young woman, obviously apart of the Boredoms posse, filming the show with a small child of Boredoms kin strapped to her chest--with large headphones attached to his dwarfed head, he was limp and fast asleep; I sympathized. As the show progressed, however, and the songs took a more articulated and dynamic turn, taking advantage of the instrumental setup, I began to enjoy myself, forgetting the excruciating lower back pain I often experience at standing shows. Two encores later, one in which EYE took heed of the crowds shouts of "ACID POLIZEI!", the Boredoms crew quickly shuffled out the back door.

A mediocre show overall, perhaps not worth the 18$ ticket price--

i saw boredoms in philly with hrvatski and lightning bolt...wasnt the right crowd for hrvatski but he was prett solid..i prefer the stuff he does as kieth fullerton whitman tohugh..whtaever....lightning bolt were pretty solid..but at this point..ive seen them enough times that thier sets pretty much depend more on circumstance and crowd for me ..i think they sound a lot better live now than they used to but nothing will top seeing them in an alley in baltimore or at the now defunct aethenium in philly..so many little kids come out for them now..its wierd.
boredoms...for me..was one of the best live perfomances i've ever seen..it was just amazing sonically..they sound checked for over 4 hours..miced everything to perfection..played relentlesslty and did two encores..eye had the whole crowd going crazy and dancing..sweat all over the place..the venue had to turn on all the air conditioners and fans..you could see steam,,,crowd surfers..shirtless frenzies..shit ruled.

Yeah, Cleveland shows I have attended have been notorious for having unenthusiastic crowds. I mean, we want to hear the music, but we don't feel like taking our shirts off.

i was at the same philly boredoms show. their set was definitely like a scene out of PCU 2! amazing crowd response. i was floored by the stamina and precision of all three drummers. those spinning orbs or whatever that eye was whirling around were sick! if anyone knows what i'm talking about, i want to know what that thing was exactly. it's too bad that LB were so AVERAGE, nowhere near the intensity of the previous times ive seen them. i think a lot of it had to do with the fact that they went on so early in a fairly large-sized venue as opposed to 12 or 1am when everyone is wasted at some crammed diy space or small club with a 5 or 6 dollar cover charge. i'm not a big fan of the new album either. i hate to say it, but it just sounds too dynamic. not enough of the straightforward relentlessness of the previous material. maybe they peaked with wonderful rainbow??
hrvatski was alright, but i agree with Door..keith's eai stuff is far more interesting to me. ive never been to that venue before but it kind of had a roller rink vibe. btw, the show did not look sold out at all.

Door, i'm stoked for the show @ the bank in a couple of weeks. that space is awesome

I saw Earth, Growing, Sunn, and Merzbow all play at the same venue last summer. I never payed much attention to my Tinnitus before that show, but damn, that show left me cringing and exhausted with a new more aggressive development in my chronic head ringing. Jon was right (in a prior post about a month ago regarding those loud noise/drone acts), ear plugs are mandatory -- butt plugs are optional (though highly recommended). I had my fingers in my ears the entire show. I could have had concrete in my ears instead of ear plugs and still would have left completely deaf.

a brand new space in baltimore on the same block as tarantula hill. i think peter b is living there. its taking over for t-hill for the time being. it used to be a bank and theres a lot of different areas to set up, anywhere in the main room, inside the vault, out in the backyard if its acoustic. great pa system.

it's definitely a grower. i don't think it's as good as wonderful rainbow either, but after spending time with it i wouldn't call it disappointing. plus, it's lightning bolt, so when you're in a lightning bolt kind of mood, it's your best bet.

everyone is saying this, especially about the columbus show. i just couldnt disagree more. i dont think, personally, theres anything wrong with watching four of most talented people playing now kicking ass for almost two hours. relentless talent is something i love to watch usually.

I saw the Columbus Boredows show and this is exactly how I felt. There was a point where the drums slowed down somewhat (and actually seemed to not play the exact same thing) and Eye introduced a new sample (it had a low bass tone, with some tamburas on top and then what sounded like backwards guitar and bells/chimes) and I actually started to enjoy what I was hearing, but it felt like 45 minutes before it hit this point and by then it was too late for me.

However, I did enjoy the opening act (Doug McCombs & David Daniell? I think). Some nice looped guitar drones
