and i forgot Marble Sheep. what i've heard of their early stuff is great. my fav is Whirl Live, a double cd of live material from '88-'89. also good is Old From New Heads, but with worse sound quality. Shinjuku Loft is like a bad bootleg. i havent heard their other early stuff, like the first cd on Alchemy and Big Deal, probably soulseek has it somewhere. i know that later they started to sound like The Grateful Dead, and this stuff apparently isn't as good (never heard it). however, their latest, For Demolition Of A Spiritual Framework, is nothing like Dead and is pretty cool.

later Boredoms have that sort of Kraut vibe to them, but I still wouldn't really consider them to be psych. Actually, there are a number of bands mentioned in this thread that I wouldn't consider to be psych, but I guess all psych threads eventually devolve into arguments about which bands qualify as psych and which don't.
it's all been covered ere, but i'm going to weigh in anyway, since Japanese psych is some of my favorite music.
i don't think Acid Mothers Temple are any good. To me, they sound aimless and sloppy, and too often like they're just marking time to fill up another album.
However:
Overhang Party "4" CD (Pataphysique, JP) to me, this gorgeous album is one of my very favorite rock records of any style/country/time. The songs all soar, really blistering stuff. If you've heard thier tracks on Tokyo Flashback 1 and 2, those are rough compared to this mature album.
Kosoukuya "Ray Night Live 1991" CD (Forced Exposure, US) heavy, bleak, black songs that seem to suck in light like a black hole. Psychedelic isn't quite the right word for this, but I don't know what else you'd call it. Post-Raillizes something, to be sure...
Jutok Kaneko "Endless Ruins" CD/LP (PSF, JP) a solo album from the main Kosoukuya guy... marginally more 'normal', barely more 'rock', jaw-droppingly original music. If you love Miminokoto (which of course, you do), the staggered falling-apart weirdness of Kaneko's songs may be easier to take.
Magical Power Mako "Hapmonium 1-5" 5CD (MIO, Israel) Loathe as I am to tell you that an Israeli import 5-CD boxset is crucial... well, it is. Sorry. You're going to have to spend some money on this one, but don't worry: if you enjoy being confused, this one will give you what you're looking for. Recorded between MPM's first fucked-up folk/huh? major-label album "Super Record" and his more rock-n-roll "Magical Power", these five CDs of his home studio experiements from the early 1970s take in Faust-like jams, stoned guitar noodles, chanting, acid-damaged folk-like things, and who in hell knows what else. If my description doesn't sound helpful, that's because this shit is hard to describe. Take my word for it, though... for a fuller picture of the Japanese psych universe, you do need this boxset.
Doodles "2" CDr (Purfiva, JP) An under-rated band of Velvets-y low-key whispers. Loose songs with hints of melodies, the sort of thing that I can put on repeat all weekend long, and stay smiling... Rinji from Overhang party has something to do with this band (not sure what) and the label is run by Masami Kawaguchi from Miminokoto, so... there's yr cred.
Tomokawa Kazuki "Fault of Flowers" CD (PSF, JP) I guess this guy was a mainstream folk singer at some point, but I'm not too clear on his history. I also don't understand Japanese, so I can only get the sound and feeling of his voice, not the lyrics. Still, that's plenty. There are some songs here for just acoustic guitar and voice that sound as if he's going to break the neck of the guitar in half with his fingers, or that his picking hand will erupt with streams of blood. His voice can reach this peak of shatteringly nervous intensity where I'm sure I'm in the presence of genuine psychosis. For all I know, these songs are about flowers, though... I kinda don't want to find out. Imagine Tim Buckley crossed with Gibby Haynes. Maybe? One of the best, most breath-taking things PSF has ever published.

i can agree with this. they do have good stuff however.

This one
I've just downloaded "2" and the Live s/t cd-r and will give them a listen tonight. How would these compare?
seems to get mentioned a fair bit in these kind of discussions. I'm having trouble tracking it down though. Does anyone have it that they could rip/share on slsk/a.n.other? I'd like to give this mythical beast a try before stumping up relatively large amounts for it.Overhang Party "4" CD (Pataphysique, JP)

Hi, I'm new here...
I'm from Italy and I like this forum... until now I was only a reader, but today I've decided to create an account...
I'd like to recommend my favourite japanese band...
they're called Ghost...
I own four of their albums and I like them all... they propose a nice form of psychedelia influenced by oriental folk, old acid-rock and a bit of cosmic music (Popol Vuh and other Germany stuff)... in the last times their singer Masaki Batoh remind me David Bowie...
the four albums that I own and that I recommend are:
"Second Time Around" (1992)
"Lama Rabi Rabi" (1996) *
"Damon and Naomi with Ghost" (2000) **
"Hypnotic Underworld" (2004)
* My favourite.
** Like said the title, it is a collaboration with Damon and Naomi (both from Galaxie 500). Their most acoustic album.

Metamorphosis, the Ghost dvd, has lots of nice footage, especially anything shot in a church or temple.
Also, I don't think L has been mentioned. After playing drums with Fushitsusha (anybody know which albums?) he recorded Holy Letters, dark and beautiful psych-folk. Really spare and somehow both haunted and peaceful. His August Born collab with Ben Chasny is nice, but it doesn't come close.
Can anybody recommend some Les Rallizes Denude other than Heavier than a Death in the Family? Is the studio stuff worthwhile?
