Yeah, it's my favorite of his. 'The Cry of My People' is in the same vein, though not quite as good.

Hey Magazine what's the best Gary Numan album? I've got The Pleasure Principle, and it's great, but what else should I get?

[user_60]

I guess I'm going to have to check out Attica Blues now. Thanks a lot; don't you know I'm broke?

Numan's first 5 albums are all essential. Telekon and Replicas are your safest next listens if you like Pleasure Principle, but my favorite is 'I, Assassin', which is extremely funky and dark. 'Dance' is interesting too, though a bit inconsistent. And if you're interested, I think 'Warriors' is pretty great. Though by that time ('83) many people think the music has gotten too cheesy. I love it all before 'Berserker' though.

only three quarters of these might survive the next time i look at this list (if ever), and naturally theres some influence based on what ive been abusing lately. ah well.

nice list. really nice. maybe i should embrace my inner geek and do a top 100 list myself.

I am listening to Archie Shepp's Attica Blues for the first time, and I think it will be in my top 100 by the time it stops playing. Holy cow.

Depends which type of Shepp you like, but this album is a monster, IMHO. I love the grandness, the the groove, and the mess of it all. Mama Too Tight is probably my favorite of his more "jazzy" albums (the earlier Impulse! ones), but I like how on this disc he really broadens the range of influences and lets everything hang out.

And wtf happened to him anyway? Why has he put out so much shite since the late 60s/early 70s? The duets with Horace Parlan are worth a listen (and maybe the recent disc with Mal Waldron), but there are a lot of low points from the 70s and 80s. And the last time I saw him, I hate to say it, but dude needed a drool cup underneath his reed. Gross.

[user_333]

I've spent the last couple weeks (well, the x days since polky's post) listening to Attica Blues and The Cry of My People. Both are pretty solid. I think I like the tunes on AB better, but man if some of the vocals on that one aren't just downright silly.

[user_333]

I also downloaded Four for Trane around the same time; I enjoy it, but since I'm a complete jazz dilettante it takes non-vocal stuff much longer to sink in.

[user_60]

I saw Shepp play this past year, with Roswell Rudd, Andrew Cyrille and Reggie Workman. He wasn't completely on top of his game, and Rudd showed him up, but it was still one of the most blistering sets of jazz I've ever seen. They played pretty straight jazz. It was in a relatively small church with great acoustics. Man, it was great.

I just found out that among the guests of that same festival this year are the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Marshal Allen, Supersilent, and Pauline Oliveros. I'd better start saving my money now.
