Thanks for the feedback, both of youse.
Liar and Goat both have their qualities that are in ways superior to Head, but there's something about the continuity of that first Jesus Lizard LP that makes it near perfect for me. I appreciate the songs and recording quality of the other two more (I think Goat is the best-sounding rock and roll record of all time), but Head just has a flow and energy that's hard to describe. It sort of reminds me of Pink Flag in that sense.
Was Da Ist is special because I'm a bass player myself (electric, unfortunately) but also because I was lucky enough to befriend Peter on his tour of the U.S. in 2000. He used Atlanta as a base. I helped him look for a car and take care of various odds and ends as he was getting ready to hit the road for his solo tour of the States, something he'd dreamed about for a long time. He was a wonderful human being and will be sorely missed.
Soft Lights is mind-blowing. It took me quite a while to find it on CD (and I paid a pretty penny for it) but it was money well-spent. I was lucky enough to catch the Clusone Trio just a few months before they disbanded and they did not disappoint.
The Black Saint is definitely the definitive Mingus album in my opinion, even with the harsh edits in parts, but you can't go wrong with any of the albums he did with Eric Dolphy like Antibes. Let My Children Hear Music was an interesting choice too. That was released on CD right around the same time I first got a CD player, so that was one of the earliest Mingus albums I bought. It's a bit polished and formal, but it's undeniably Mingus's music. I pulled it out a few months ago and enjoyed it more than I thought I would considering as I bought more and more of his stuff over the years I more or less tuned out his 70s output.
One of these days I'll buy Monk's Riverside recordings which is supposed to be the absolute shit (I have one or two of the individual discs,) but for now, the Blue Note set is it for me. I do have some of the later Columbia stuff and that's great too - especially the collected solo recordings from that label.
EDIT: I just noticed I spelled "Hausswolff" wrong. Sorry about that, Carl.

I was totally getting that vibration from your list. Can we get to 100 bass albums? Non bassists are subject to our veto. Tubas need not apply. 1 per:Milam Minute wrote: Was Da Ist is special because I'm a bass player myself (electric,

Heh. It might be a timing thing as much as anything -- the first Tortoise song I ever heard was "The Equator," played on the local music show on Chicago's dad-rock station, when I was a sophomore in high school. It dug in its claws and forever put TNT on an intangibly higher level than any other album of theirs I would subsequently hear.Brother Zoot wrote:Good work picking TNT over Millions Now Living.
