I'm just starting to listen to him, I have Desperate Attempts at Beauty and Crawl Unit-Stop Listening. my fiancee was blown away on first listen to Desperate Attempts at Beauty, which is amazing, because she pretty much hates everything I play besides erstwhiles (not from the "unlistenable noise" perspective you might think, but from a jaded "this all sounds so old and boring" perspective). I know Nirav is a huge fan, I'm sure others are, so maybe you guys can fill me in more about him. thanks!

"stop listening" is my favorite of his- i can't stop listening to it most of the time. close seconds are the two releases on C.I.P. ("everyone gets what they deserve" and "anthem (static for empty life)"

two older releases i have- "aftermusic" (94) and "the future in reverse" (97) are also quite good but a bit murkier in sound.

i don't know much about him but most of what i've heard by him is pretty close to brilliant.

you can probably get pretty much all of his in-print output from RRR and Ground Fault. super cheap.

"Anthem: Static for Empty Life" 3" CD on crippled intellect is up there with his best. may even be my favorite. just got his (oop?) split 7" with john wiese & his side of that is pretty awesome too - though sadly wiese seems to simply be going through the motions. i got it from RRR. maybe he has some more.

jon, have you heard much daniel menche? i find his recent work to be along the same line as joe's, but slightly more harsh. maybe a halfway point between joe c. and recent kevin drumm?

I haven't listened to "Stop Listening" enough to really place it among his other work, but I'd say that besides "Desperate Attempts..." it's a toss up between the the Crippled Intellect 3", which sounds more composed electronics than his 3" on Banned, which is live recordings of a "prepared chord organ" with lots of creative mic'ing, and for whatever reason reminds me a little bit of Elaine Radigue. Both are really gorgeous, and up there with them is "Everyone Gets What They Deserve" on Crippled Intellect. Chris tells me that he thinks that the man pulled a Robert Johnson at some point and sold his soul to the devil in order to become the genius he is.

yea, anthem might be my favorite of the admittedly limited amount i've heard so far. the banned 3", untitled piece for prepared chord organ..., is good also, even more low-key.

this thread made me drag out 'desperate attempts at beauty', but i'm distracted from the expected enjoyment thereof by the discovery of a large flaw on the disc. i'm now checking other cd players to see if they will play past it.

i was enjoying it till then, though, through 3.5 tracks... this is only a second listen, so i'll withhold further thoughts.

Oh yeah, the same thing happened to one of my cd players. It worked on another (better) one at my folks' house, and it plays fine on my discman. Maybe burning a cd-r of it and playing that would work?

no luck. gonna have to hunt down a quality rip of tracks 4 and 8, they aren't rippable.

put on 'stop listening' instead. good stuff.

I received the Colley 'desparate' disc today, put it on (and enjoyed it a good deal), forgetting about the disc defect problem discussed above. Toward the end, half-listening, I was thinking how odd it was that the rhythms and tones I was hearing were remarkably similar to spoons and washboard playing, similar syncopation and such. Went on for several minutes before I thought to glance over at the player and saw the timing indicator stuttering in place.....

Very nice disc though.....

hmmm. i haven't had this problem at all. i wonder if it was just a certain batch of the run. i'm not sure i've played it on a regular stereo yet, but on at least two computers it's been fine.

I mailed Erik Hoffman about it earlier (basically wondering if the defect was pervasive since if that was the case it's something I'd have to mention in any write-up). Here's his reply:

When we first heard of that defect on the Colley disc we thought it was a
fluke. Sometimes you find a random defect on the disc face...a bubble or
something...and I thought that was all that was wrong. I'm really
disapointed to hear that there is more than one bad one out there. I'm
going to have to ask around to get a feel for how many bad ones are out
there. I will definately repress it if necissary. I will offer replacement
CDs to anyone that encounters a bad one. I'll send you a replacement CD.
Please let me know if it works for you. If you could spread the word that I
will replace defective CDs I would appreciate it. I will want the defective
one back. I will provide a pre-paid postage packet with the replacement.

I love the cd that just came out on ausculture as well,
had dinner with him one time in california and he is super mellow,

i think he's done some collaborative installations, but i'm not sure how many releases. there was one with francisco lopez (a 3") a few years ago, but i don't know a single person that's ever heard it. probably sold out insanely fast.

Nah, just super hard to find in the US. It is on Antifrost and it is really great (as are many of the releases on the label). Check out the new update:
