Peter Strickland, The Duke of Burgundy, 2014
"The Killing of Sister George cloaked as Vampyros Lesbos", quips this fine review https://www.filmcomment.com/article/rev ... trickland/ - and, as all you lepidopterists know, the Duke of Burgundy is a species of butterfly (below). British expat director (he lives in Hungary, where this was filmed) Strickland is an intriguing character, as well versed in improvised music (my pal Jean-Michel Van Schouwburg pops up here as he did on Berberian Sound Studio) as he is in schlock sexploitation movies. Jess Franco, Kenneth Anger and Stan Brakhage all get namechecked in this interview https://theseventhart.org/peter-strickl ... -burgundy/ but I detect more than a whiff of Greenaway in the combination of sexual shenanigans and anal collectoritis. And the scripted dialogues recall Lanthimos's Alps (see above), too. Intriguing stuff.
