Side By Side

Post by SqDanceCallingSteve »

So tonight I did the singing call to Side By Side. Kudos to Karen K for alerting me a while ago to fine lines in the song I was leaving out.

As you look into this song, it turns out to be one of those little bits of the world that unfolds into unexpected bouquets!

The original song is from 1927, but the definitive and most popular version was Kay Starr's 1953 rendition:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELcF3eVnVdw

Music written by the ubiquitous Gus Kahn, a Tin Pan Alley and American Songbook stalwart.

Lyrics are by Harry Woods, a lesser known name but a fascinating story in himself. Harry was born with no fingers on his left hand but encouraged in music by his mother, who was a concert singer. Woods graduated Harvard with a music degree and set up shop as a songwriter in Manhattan. First hit was Paddlin' Maddlin Home:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaAhE0UBuqE

When The Red, Red, Robin Comes Bob, Bobbin' Along, was a smash for Harry, rendered here in a later version by one of the all-time greatest (albeit underrated) jazz singers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_HThbCF7_Q

This was the most popular version of Woods' classic I'm Looking Over A Four-Leaf Clover:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VY-_8XOrvTs

Woods also wrote Try A Little Tenderness in 1932, although the definitive version came 34 years later when Otis Redding and Booker T and The MGs joined forces for the sublime soulful 1966 rendition of the song:

Although Woods' lyrics were unflaggingly upbeat and sweetly sentimental, Woods himself was a "dangerous and volatile alcoholic." He died at 73 in 1970, hit by a car in front of his house in Glendale, AZ.

I'm just a kid again doin' what I did again,
Steve

That's a good one, Wombatz!

I've a had a huge response from the club I sent the above post to, my high level advanced and challenge club, about Side By Side. A half dozen remembered it as a song they had sung with their mothers, one telling me her mother remembered the song well enough to sing it long after she had forgotten the names of her children who were singing along with her.

Here's Slam Stewart and Major Holley doing it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTVPRg5jGDY

Incredible documentary of Momente. Not just the music, Stockhausen and Martina Arroyo. But those 60s duds!!
