Love it! Also love Ami Yoshida on Cosmos' Tears with Sachiko M. I'm partial to voices in avant garde: Sainkho Namtchylak, Lauren Newton, David Moss, Evelyn Petrova, The Magic ID, etc. Amy Yoshida's voice is the outer limits in a way since it is usually unrecognizable as a voice per se, although the phrasing and malleability retain their voicelike properties. I think Soba to Bara is probably an easier/ warmer listen and Cosmos' Tears a little more austere, and maybe a little stronger.mono tony wrote:thoughts on this?SqDanceCallingSteve wrote:

I'm just curious after looking up that character in the dictionary if it means "wheat" or not?
Re: Now Playing
it is 'So' from Soba to Bara, the other characters are on the other panels.
obviously I put out that CD, but it's a huge fave of mine, my pick of the three Ami CDs I put out (which I think are easily the three best she has done) and quite possibly my favorite ever single CD release on Erst, due in part to the almost miraculous way that it came together. there are Japanese-only liner notes which we translated here:

My first acquaintance with his style of playing was with the monumental At the Five Spot (Dolphy, Booker Little, Richard Davis, Ed Blackwell).SqDanceCallingSteve wrote:![]()
I never really got much out of his 50s/60 output, and I think most of the early Prestige discs are sort of missable.
For me his output around 1970-73 is his most interesting. Longer improvisations, perhaps not as lyrical but strong on textures, dark and kind of hypnotic in repetition.
Blood And Guts (Futura), Tokyo Bound (Victor), Black Glory (Enja), Plays The Blues (Enja), Up Popped the Devil (Enja) are all worth seeking out.

Re: Now Playing
Well I have to say this 8 album collection was mostly disappointing, but it did have its moments. And I love Teddy Charles! The only one of the 8 albums I already had was the one with a young Trane.bedouin wrote:My first acquaintance with his style of playing was with the monumental At the Five Spot (Dolphy, Booker Little, Richard Davis, Ed Blackwell).SqDanceCallingSteve wrote:![]()

I have lots of Mal and love almost all of it. My favorites are two with Steve Lacy -- One-Upmanship and Sempre Amore. I also like the albums with Jeanne Lee and David Murray. Love these kinds of threads for prompting me to put them in the TO PLAY queue. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oadZ0t4MGf0
I will keep an eye peeled for your recs! NONE are currently are available for reasonable prices, although Black Glory is available as an mp3 download.

It's very catchy,
lots of Johns featured heavily in the first part, so if your name is John then you're in for a wild ride.
Re: Now Playing

I wish I could somehow remove the Milesian muted trumpet from "Burning of Stones." If it were just the three harpists playing their Schoenbergian improv, it'd be awesome. But, IMO, it's wrecked by Smith's contribution, which locks it into 1970s "jazz."

Re: Now Playing
I had another surprise "Lenny experience" the other day. I was listening to a Bartok Concerto for Orchestra on the radio, and when the last section was a million miles per hour, I wondered who the hell was doing it and (again), figured it was some young lion triying to distinguish himself from the pack. He did it again--Bernstein/NY Phil. Probably a bit too fast in parts, and a little sloppy. But holy shit.
Meanwhile, the late Maestro Boulez gets two orgies on WHRB this month. One as a conductor, the other as a composer.
