I recommend the recording of Fifth Book by La Venexiana (a brilliant Italian group who specialise in Monteverdi) on Glossa - don't have one of the Sixth.
This is exactly what I ordered yesterday, and presumably the sixth will follow shortly if Cavina's obsession w/Monteverdi is anything to go by.

Oh sorry, I messed something up. I was at work and had no acces to my shelf.

The recording I mentioned only has a few tracks of Book VI.

But I have a recording from the 6th Book of 1983 and of the 5th of 1990 and 12 Madrigals of Monteverdis Book II. A 2 CD set from the Collegium Vocale Köln directed by Fromme. And it is from CBS 1990. It sounds very good and clear and has nearly no reverb. I like it this way and is on heavy rotation.

But i guess it is OOP :(

BTW: I am curious to hear the Venexiana CD

i second everything surfer and Jesse said about Willie Nelson.
the phrasing on Night Life, Crazy, Sad Songs and Waltzes, Time of the Preacher etc. etc. etc., if that's not good singing i don't know what is.

i also like pre-Okie Hag quite a bit, but i have to say that two of my favorite songs by him are written by Liz Anderson. still, White Line Fever, Mama Tried, Life in Prison...he's a good songwriter.

There's a few, but the Beatles are probably the main one. I think it's something about their voices that have always put me off. Having said that, I greatly enjoyed playing Beatles rock band with my nieces recently, so what on earth does that say?

I've also never been able to get anything out of Bowie or The Clash and it comes down to their voices again. Thinking about it, I'm kind of not really into much popular 60's or 70's rock music. I suspect it's as much about never having made the effort as simply not getting anything out of it.

11 year bump!! I sped through this thread and saw Wilco mentioned more than a couple of times. Do some people here still feel this way in 2015? God I love them, especially the new one - Star Wars. YHF is certainly one of the greatest "song" albums ever imho. I cry when I get to Pot Kettle Black, and it still isn't over.

The Doors. Always thought they were crap and still can't believe the elevation of Jim Morrison to rock saint. I saw them live at the Fillmore in '67 -- Richie Havens (R.I.P.) and The James Cotton Blues Band opened for them and smoked them.

I don't know. Who's critically acclaimed these days? Jay-Z? Kanye? Amy Winehouse? None of those guys particularly blow me away.

aphex twin seems to be getting an appropriate level of praise nowadays.. though he's not that big, and barely on the radar for younger people. the high frequency of activity in the last year has been a treat, with the official releases and the sheer glut of the soundcloud material. the bonus track from his latest ep is pretty sweet. https://bleep.com/release/63405-afx-umil-25-01

I always found "The End" and "Light my Fire" okay. But a drum student of mine asked me to teach him ALL The Doors songs on drums, and delving into their discography a little further was... painful for me.

I'd like to add Tom Waits. For me first of all a poser and show man. A designed and calculated act in my eyes. Urgh.

The Doors first two records are pretty good in my opinion, but I don't like very much the stuff after Strange Days. But "When the music's over" for example it's a pretty good song, with Manzarek funky organ at the beginning.
One of the most overrated musician ever is philip glass in my opinion. I have to admit i've never listened to his first stuff(Music in changing parts ecc.) but Koyanisqatsi and Einstein on the beach are really terrible and banal. The same is for Michael Nyman.

I don't hate The Doors, but, FWIW, I never saw much difference between Jim Morrison and earlier generation guys like Andy Williams. Their decent stuff was in spite of Morrison's crooning, IMO.

I used to watch the film Koyaanisqatsi all the time on VCR when I was much younger, and I always muted it and played my own music. pretty much anything I liked sounded much better (and everything fit well), the time I saw it in the theater with the Glass soundtrack I wanted to rip my ears off.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I would say Ian McKaye's Minor Threat. I read in an article with him saying that they were once so poor that they had to make dog food sandwiches. Huh? Why not just eat the bread? I don't understand.

what does calculated mean here? he would not originally have known anybody'd be willing to follow him when he switched from slouched stand-up crooner to his present gear ... still i sort of agree as i cannot listen to anything after Rain Dogs because of the studiedness of the act (even when the music is great, as in Bone Machine, the histrionics are too much for me) ... except maybe Blood Money, which wears its Weillish theatricality on it's sleeve and is poppy if a bit slight ...

cleverly worked out to achieve particular effects in terms of artist image.

I can't look into Tom Waits' brain, but that's the way I perceive him.

Re Waits, do you folks think he was ever consciously mimicking Beefheart?

I know exactly what you guys mean about Waits, but for me it was legit or at least he pulled it off for quite some time. I think the early stuff is fine and Swordfishtrombones/Rain Dogs/Bone Machine are great, after that I haven't been able to listen to anything subsequent.

Probably in a similar way Beefheart was mimicking Howling Wolf?

I more and more refrain from statements like X copied Y here. Over the years I've encountered so many "ripp-off" creations I love and like better than the allegedly ripped-off original. You can see it this or that way, but I say being touched, inspired and carrying a significant sound or idea further, put it into new contexts is not a bad thing.

(love most Beefheart by the way)

i still love swordfishtrombones / rain dogs. (the latter made me buy half a dozen marc ribot records until i finally understood he would not play like that in any other context.)
