( Notice #27 ) — Black William / Litüus : " Fissures / κλίση "
Litüus is from Madison, WI; less is known of Black William. Somehow, on this split of hypnotically minimal synth pieces, that seems appropriate. Black William’s side takes a simple repeated figure and expands it (by hand) into an expansive buzzing drone. Litüus likewise programs a sequence that remains in constant change throughout the piece's duration. Both sides combine programmed sequences with planned change, but also include a certain level of machine/human interaction. Certain parameters are predetermined; others altered by a human being. Both draw attention to structure, change and duration, resulting in a unique harmony between the organic and the industrial.

( Notice #28 ) — Ryan Jewell : " Radio: Vol. 2 "
Upon seeing Ryan Jewell’s patient, rigorous and riveting performance at Chicago’s very first Neon Marshmallow festival, we were fascinated by his meticulous sonic explorations falling somewhere in-between percussion, minimalism and electronic composition. Several years on, Jewell, still based in Columbus, OH, has continued to build an impressive resume as a co-conspirator with all sorts of people. Populated by acoustic textures, percussion-based sonic events, and unconventionally performed sounds, the assuredly paced solo pieces in Radio: Vol. 2 reveal Jewell as the yin to the noisier side of the Ohio scene.

We have a lot planned in the coming months, extending into 2015:
Four tapes are planned for release in October: An intense 90-minute long set of spacious improvised sound constructions by Samuel Rodgers & Jack Harris, meditative and organic jaw harp pieces recorded on Nova Scotia's coast by Chik White, the fourth installment in Ben Owen's Birds and Water series, documenting his residency at the Experimental Television Studio in Oswego, NY, and finally, the twelfth Haptic release, entitled Excess of Vision: Unreleased Recordings, 2005-2014.
Thereafter, we'll have a November batch featuring Bhob Rainey and Joda Clément. This will coincide with their performance in Portland, Oregon, and will be co-presented by The Creative Music Guild. We're very much looking forward to this show and these releases, as both artists have been creating extremely engaging material as of late.
After all of that, 2015 will be upon us, and we'll still have a number of things planned. Most exciting is a John Cage release, which reissues the rare and long out-of-print tape-only 1972 release, Mureau. This was released three times in different editions (!), all on cassette (!) by the German label Edition S Press. The piece is an interesting example (and a much over-looked one, might we add) of one of Cage's pieces produced by chance procedures, in this case using the I Ching. Cage's fascination with the writings of Henry David Thoreau is exemplified in Mureau. The text is the product of syllable-word-phrase-sentence mixes, created by using said chance procedures, based on Thoreau's writing on music and silence. We'll be working with the John Cage Trust to hopefully locate the master tapes of this recording, although we may have to settle with a live recording of the reading.
2015 will also find releases from Loren Chasse, Portland math/noise/avant/prog/whatever-rock wizards U SCO, Burlington, VT-based rock/love band Swale, featuring a newly remastered cassette version — by Giuseppe Ielasi — of their early 3" CD release, Verdigris, as well as new-ish improvised material.
