Agreed on Cradle. Everything up unto 'Cruelty...' is genius in my book.F&B wrote:That first Cradle album is great.cleanzero wrote:For sure I hate both Pantera and Cannibal Corpse . Never have listened to the others.schiksalgemeinschaft wrote:a fun read, albeit a bit controversial:

'Far Beyond Driven' is excellent too, quite dark. 'Vulgar' has great grooves, but the rest of Pantera sucks.
All the other bands listed are indeed muck.
Re: the IHM metal thread
The only thing that has possibly ruined metal right now is corporate-sponsored touring, obnoxious fickle dilettantes, and music critics.

For those in the USA, Nuclear War Now is having a 25 percent off sale right now presently.
Re: the IHM metal thread
For anyone on facebook, I started a "IHM Metal" group open to anyone who would like to nerd out about metal shitz. I invited a few people already, so please feel free to join up if you're at all interested... https://www.facebook.com/groups/1522241507994304/
Re: the IHM metal thread
wondering what you feel that achieves beyond shutting out those like myself who aren't on facebook
Re: the IHM metal thread
uh, well, that's not the intention. This place has slowed down, and it just seems like another venue for discussion. I'm sure it won't stop people from posting here.

Re: the IHM metal thread
There have been a couple of posts on the FB-metal-group already, none of which appeared here. Doing stuff over there will surely slow things down here further. This has been obvious, since it has been happening for the other non-metal discussions for months/years.
Going to FB for discussions is a form of elitism, because in FB you have more control over who you add as a friend, etc., trimming down the participants, avoiding trolls, avoiding people who - god forbid - don't stay on topic, etc. In short, it avoids all those people who left or were purged because of IHM's aggressive moderating.
FB maybe more focussed, but it is less open. Also, the format doesn't really encourage lengthy posts, etc., so the discussion there is dumbed down to posting tidbits that people can "like".
FB excludes newcomers or lurkers that don't feel like adding Jon or Brian or Mark or whoever on FB, or people who don't use FB in general.
It's a shame, not sure what is to be done about it.

Re: the IHM metal thread
not really the thread, but so sick of reading this in different places. people left as they always do, but any "aggressive moderating" at any point on IHM was almost entirely hallucinated.schiksalgemeinschaft wrote:In short, it avoids all those people who left or were purged because of IHM's aggressive moderating..
I am all for IHM discussions, they just never seem to really happen much anymore and I don't know if they would if FB and Twitter disappeared tomorrow either. there are also never any comments on Brian or Richard's blogs anymore, dunno how it's all evolved this way but it has.

Re: the IHM metal thread
Internet fatigue?
When you work through a hundred emails a day, do half your shopping online and a good chunk of your social engagement involves sifting through the less than ideally filtered photographs and thoughts of everyone you know, then who feels like spending their leisure time having a discussion using the same tools?
It's a shame, but I don't think it's about forums vs facebook. Either way you sit in the same position, moving your hands in the same way, equally excluded from life going on in your immediate physical vicinity. Forums were amazing 10 years ago when lots of things were different and the internet was a contrast to everyday life rather than its fabric.

Re: the IHM metal thread
I really didn't anticipate this bothering people. The facebook page is public, and open to anyone who wants to join. Yes, you do need to be on facebook. Other than that, you don't have to be "friends" with me or anyone else on fb. It's as public as you can get on facebook. It's also not meant to take over from anything here. Obviously, judging from how verbose I can get on this thread, I like IHM's format. I would prefer it to all be here. But it appears that for a lot of people it's easier to post youtubes, random photos, and links there. Ultimately, I think it's easier for people to comment more casually on fb. Anywho, I've posted here as much as anyone, but I'm not sure I see a ton of real conversations going on. There's a lot of recommendations, but not a lot else. As others have noted, I'm not totally sure why it's gone that way.

Re: the IHM metal thread
i agree with some of what schiksalgemeinschaft says above, i had been planning to make a thread to lay down those same thoughts.
sorry to leap on your group making efforts Tanner, just saw it as a good chance to raise it
i guess i'll try and be more proactive in making threads here etc.

Re: the IHM metal thread
there are definitely reasons to prefer IHM over FB, but please don't blindly second that ridiculous post. not only was there virtually no censorship here ever as I said once already (there sure was a lot of paranoia about censorship), but as Tanner said, most of the FB-specific problems mentioned aren't applicable here, as you don't need to be friends with anyone to join Tanner's new group, any member of FB can.

Re: the IHM metal thread
When I wrote the above, I wasn't aware that it was a public group, obviously that changes things.
And true, there was indeed no censorship, I never said or wanted to say there was. But, obviously, there was the DLO. "Aggressive" moderating is probably a too harsh a term, and I apologize for its bluntness, but sorry Jon, that's what it felt like sometimes to some people. You can dismiss those feelings as ungrounded or whatever, but I think it would merit more to think about where that "paranoia" came from.

Re: the IHM metal thread
Anyhow, It's true that, in hindsight, parts of my first post were indeed ridiculous, as if I wanted say people retreated behind the walls of FB out of elitism or to avoid off-topicness and the likes here. That clearly isn't the case, I'm sorry if it came out wrong. Like I phrased it, it looks like I unintendedly expressed wrong cause-result relationships. I just wanted to say that talk behind FB walls in non-open groups isn't the way to go, but that doesn't apply here.
Also, in general, my post just stemmed from a certain sadness/frustration that IHM isn't the place it used to be, and that obviously is mostly due to the above described fatigue, together with the fact that you can't keep on talking to the same people about the same things for years and years on end. More new posters would have solved that for some time, so it's a pity the board as a whole didn't succeed in convincing more lurkers to post.

Re: the IHM metal thread
yeah, I didn't mean to be too harsh to you specifically. I've just seen too many people talk about the imaginary censorship, both then and now, and it was never true. moving the occasional heated exchange to DLO is a lot more open than most other boards I've seen over the years, and the alternative was something like Bagatellen or Jazz Corner with so much noise that it's hard to find the signal. more than once the people who complained the loudest and longest about their posts allegedly being removed ended up figuring out that they deleted the posts themselves while trying to edit. Mark never deleted a post with content, and he was the only one making moderating decisions here.
anyway, we've had a lot of great threads here over the years, and hopefully there will still be more to come. as I always say, if you want this place to be more active, take it upon yourself to help with that. I am certainly still here.
