New Triptykon, Melana Chasmata, sounds fantastic. Nothing groundbreaking but as far as instant gratification goes, it does the trick. I've got the second Funereal Presence cued up next, The Archer Takes Aim, and if it's anything like the eponymous debut it'll be quite satisfying...

any DM recommendations always welcome. Been listening to Immortal's Blizzard Beasts a lot. Very powerful. Maybe their most overlooked album.

Ildjarn has gotten some play here as well, as well as Dismember's Like An Everflowing Stream.

Necromass - Mysteria Mystica Zofiriana

Aevangelist is a new (for me) dm band; I've been listening to the "De Masticatione Mortuorum in Tumulis" lp from 2012 lately. It's brutal, without being typical "brutal dm." The whole album features long intro/interlude "noise" tracks that construct some sort narrative about space Cthulhu-vampires or something. . . who cares. Metalheads call that kinds of stuff "atmosphere." None the less, it's densely layered, and bludgeoning, reminding me of Wormed and Mitochondrion, without half the complexity or noodling of those bands. Singleminded stratums of overwhelming density is how I'd describe it. And lots of chug -- headphone listening. If I played video games, I'd think I would listen to this a lot while playing them.

Warpvomit is another death metal band from Seattle or Portland I've been listening to lately. It's total Blasphemy/war metal worship. But it's good. And whattaname! Warpvomit.

I'm pretty excited for the new Nuclearhammer record coming out on Nuclear War Now. I'm reaching my saturation level for this kind of chaotic war/grind/black stuff, but they do it pretty well, the little I've heard. You can stream it right now on the NWN's bandcamp.

Otherwise, I've been listening to a ton of demos from 2013-14. Necropole is a standout -- French black metal that sounds French in the Mutiilation-vein, albeit epic.

Aggressive Mutilator has released a great tape full of scuzzy, punky black metal called "Terror, Incest and Death."

Too bad Wold is stopping, but at the same time, I'm not sure how much more mileage they can get out of their sound at this point. That probably goes for a lot of bands. I wish more bands would quit earlier.

Funny you say that, I was just listening to Jeremiah Cymerman's podcast today featuring Andrew Hock (Castevet, Psalm Zero) and he was claiming that most "extreme" metal bands have at most three or four good albums in them. And then they should just stop. Makes sense for a lot of groups I think... he himself is not sure if he's got another Castevet record in him, they're working on an EP now and then that might be it.

I haven't heard it yet, but I'm going to pick it up regardless. I'm limiting my expectations.

Same (at least, as far as metal goes), a seriously good album - and along with the Ulcerate from last year, those are handily the strongest I've heard in recent times.

Great attention to detail eg. that sound at the beginning of Plagues of Forgiveness or the outro, that kind of choral stuff all too often comes off as a token gesture to suggest atmosphere and ends up sounding cheesy and crap but it actually sounds pretty great here. All the songs are great, at first I thought some of them could have been a bit briefer but now I'm not so sure haha

Also the mix is superb in general, despite the general is density it's very clear but without any sterility, a pleasure to listen to. Need to revisit Seven Chalices...

I'll have to check out Revenant. I've seen them name dropped but never heard them before.

also, agreed on that grifteskymfning that F&B posted -- I really dig that one. I think that they reused some of the songs for the Hädanfärd project. As hyped as they are in the underground death/black scene (which amounts to like five random dudes on a message board), Ancient Records do release a lot of quality stuff. I tried contacting them about possibly distributing them in the US a while back, but unsurprisingly didn't get a reply. Oh well.

I finally heard this, and I respectfully disagree. I think, if anything, the riffs seem just as memorable as Graves of the Archangels, and feel like a logical progression for their rather straight forward osdm -- adding some more speed and urgency. The whole album just seems leaner and more ravenous than GOA. Anyway, I'm digging it. A lot.

Godflesh - Decline and Fall EP

Best thing I've heard in a long time, insanely heavy. If the new album retains this level it will crush everything in its wake.
A return to Streetcleaner era, with the benefit of the Jesu experience bringing a few surprises in the songwriting department, plus the sound in general is great.

Dead in the Manger's 12 inch on 20 Buck spin is great. I'm spinning it now. Intricate, and interweaving lines. I'm not sure it sounds very American, but seems to take some influence from the orthodox French bizness: Aosoth, DsO, etc. But then again, it's got a strange post-rock aspect to it, albeit rougher than any Agalloch or Wolves in the throne room stuff. It feels far more violent. I like it a lot. Check it out if you dig any of those bands.

I have the new Vanhelgd sitting here, on deck. My hopes are high.
