On a recent trip to Oslo I visited Råkk & Rålls Nastalgie, an excellent second hand record shop. Their 'world' section was stuffed full of cheap to reasonably priced goodies including a kings ransom of Folkways and Ethnic Folkways LPs, I came away with 'Maroc I" on Ocora, a 2LP set of Music from the Orient on Folkways, and a lovely Instrumental Music of the Kalahari San LP.

If anyone's in or near Oslo it's well worth a trip to the top floor of this shop.

Moudou Ould Mattalla - Guitare des Sables

Not on Ocora, but still.
Improvised guitar from the fringes of west Sahara (Mauritania).
Think of Sugimoto's Opposite (though with the occasional chanting, percussion and what sounds like crickets on some tracks).

That Musique Du Monde series stuff can sometimes be even better than Ocora stuff to my ears. Some of my favorites:

I'm a huge fan of your blog, I followed it since the beginning with your La Monte Young posts! I do weekly broadcasts for the University student radio, and your Ocora posts were really useful! And yeah, Ocora still does kick-ass cd's, like this one:

A few to add:

An Anthology of South Indian Classical Music (by L. Subramaniam)

4 cds, fantastic, varied. I'd say this is in the same league as the Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan 4cd set.

Japan - Nagauta - Ensemble Kineya

Kabuki theater music, very dramatic & expressive. Vocals, lutes, flute & some drums.

Japon - Ensemble Hijriri Kaï

classical trio music, with flute, koto & lute in various permutations

Japon - Satsuma Biwa - Kakujô Iwasa & Kakurjû Saitô

duo of vocals & biwa lute

Inde du Nord - L'art du sarangi - Ram Narayan

The sarangi, a bowed, hort-necked string instrument, at times accompanied by tabla & tampura percussion.


Also +1 for Duif's mention of Kinshi Tsuruta Satsuma biwa disc, extremely expressive: the grand dame Kinishi Tsuruta on vocals for 2 tracks, accompanied by 3 of her students on biwa lutes, and one track where she sings and plays lute herself.


If some one has good recommendations in the vein of the Indian music I mentioned: shoot!

I have a few more to add. All of these have been reissued fairly recently in the new series lay-out. Some of them aren't coupled to their older versions on Discogs, so that's confusing. Most of these can be ordered new from Amazon.fr, or amazon.co.uk or Honest Jon Records.
