Rap Music
Re: Rap Music
Some other mixtapes I've heard lately:
Kafani - De$tined to Rule
Nice to hear some new Kafani, but this one didn't do much for me. Maybe if it came out in 2009 it would have made more of an impression, but feels kind of desperate. Some good beats though.
Soulja Boy - Foreign
This one is pretty bad. 30 tracks, and 25 of them are basically the same track. The only track I kept from this one is "Givenchy".
Rocko - Gift of Gab 2
This one's alright, good to hear from this guy again too.
Gucci Mane - Trap God 2
Pretty good Gucci.
Birdman - Rich Gang All Stars
Not really my thing (not really into Maybach Music or Young Money, hate Drake). Also, Limp Bizkit is on it???! I've already hear these Future tracks. No good.

Re: Rap Music
Some older stuff I've been listening to:
B Legit - the hemp museum
B Legit's 2nd album. I really wasn't that familiar with his solo work, but after hearing "You Gotta Buy Dope From Us" on a screw tape recently, I had to check it out. Really dig this album.
Mob Life - Crook County II
Lesser known Westside Chicago stuff. Super evil creepy beats. I am a big fan of this sound.
mercedes - rear end
This one really surprised me. Everyone knows her 99 hit "I Can Tell", but she disappeared after this album came out (and went to law school?!). Pretty damn solid album.
Ann P - No Remorse
Memphis female rapper who is pretty rad, even if half of the tracks on this cd are the worst sound quality ever. Like, worse than old UG tapes, sounds like a deaf dude mastered them or something. This came out in 2007 but I'm guessing it's a collection of new and old 90s recordings. DJ Sound produced/related.
Gimisum Family - Skinny Pimp Pt. 1
This rules. The "Shout Outs" track is one of the most fucked up Memphis tracks I've found so far.

Re: Rap Music
I'm liking the listening info dump (I dunno how else to say it), and also liking the Young Thug that you mentioned. However, and in contrast to the varied listening above, I get stuck on tapes that I can benefit from varying levels of attention span that I can ride to or work to. Still regularly checking for mixtapes but nothing too disturbing or aggressive in sound on repeat. The Chicago stuff scares me too much, for example. It's pretty effective! Although I've enjoyed the new Gucci it's been a bit hard to return to. I've been playing Curren$y "New Jet City" probably too much. Good for driving or working, nothing too angular in sound or theme. The better half has been liking Kendrick a lot.dave quam wrote:Some other mixtapes I've heard lately:

here.
Re: Rap Music
Yeah! Right about that for sure, should have mentioned that.
Re: Rap Music
Much thanks for the recommendation... this tape is super weird and fun. I've actually been kinda bored with most rap since Pluto came out, so this is right up my alley.dave quam wrote:
Anybody digging the new Young Thug mixtape? I definitely am, like a 17-year-old Future with even less respect for the correct way your supposed to use Autotune. I liked his last one, I Came From Nothing 2, but he's definitely uhh....developed with this one. It's pretty bugged
Re: Rap Music
Hey understandable, it's not like I listen to Chicago stuff all that often. I certainly love a lot of that stuff, but it's not like I am listening to it all the time. Since the Keef album came out I haven't been listening to much at all (hasn't really been much from Chi that's been interesting since then really). The Chicago stuff scares me too much, for example. It's pretty effective!
Also, these "listening dumps" aren't like, what I've been listening to for the past week or anything, more like the past month. Some of the things I've been listening to everyday, some I've only listened to 1-2 times. Just things that caught my attention. Been listening to way too much rap music lately.

Thanks for this.bryan wrote:Also, this video and track and tape...
Got Indigoism in the car this week ; solid record.
Re: Rap Music
That Underachievers tune reminds me of Souls of Mischief circa two decades ago. Splendid, in other words.

No work tomorrow to work today.
Re: Rap Music

Been feelin this one lately, from Fat Trel's Slutty Boyz crew
Re: Rap Music
Recent Listenings:
Dew Baby - Dew Date
As I posted the other day, been into this one. Part of Fat Trels crew. Pretty standard content, token cosmic molly song and all. Beats are good, I give it a B.
Sleepy D - Sleepy Deprivation
My friend recently reminded me of how amazing D-Lo's "No Hoe" was, and it made me dig back into him and Sleepy's insanity. All I had were the Tonight Show volumes with both of them, never actually heard this album before. Fucking love this.
D-Lo - Tonight Show with D-Lo
See above.
Cousin Fik - No Gravity
Another Bay Area joint I never heard before, pretty dope. Sick Wid It Voodoo is an amazing way to start things off, what a track. Definitely a bunch of filler but still worth hearing.
Denny G - The Last Hope
A Chicago dude I found on Youtube last year that I dig. Debut mixtape, I recommend it it bangs.
MC Money and Gangsta Gold - Da Hard OV Frayser
Really solid DJ Sound produced album. Most stuff I've heard on Lite Green Records (rapper/DJ Sound's right hand man's label) is great.

On Scared of you, the beginning shouts, someone says in the background in perfect norwegian "ja, kom igjen da" (yes, come on then). It's breaking my head. And it's not a particularly cool way to phrase it for a rapper, he should know better. Also he shouldn't speak in norwegian at all.
Still, thanks for the recommendation.
Re: Rap Music
Hmm, why can't he speak Norwegian?
I just listened again, and it just sounds like he says "ya come here". I don't understand why he couldn't speak Norwegian though, I mean why not? Don't really see what the fuss is about, its half a second of audio.

Re: Rap Music
Haha, he definitely could. Not that he has to learn a new language to make him stand out.
There are many half second clips of 'did he just say', and the mixing is excellent too.
I'm not very funny :/

Re: Rap Music
I found the new young thug to be a bit of a disappointment. There were some interesting tracks and I know it's a mixtape but I found it quite uneven - I came from nothing 3 was much better.
Best stuff out the last few months i've heard:
Kevin Gates - The Luca Brasi Story
Rich Homie Quan - Still Goin In
J Stalin - Return of the Body Snatchers

Re: Rap Music
oh wow, I somehow missed I Came from Nothing 3! Only had the first 2.
I agree 1017 Thug is spotty, but It definitely has my favorite few tracks of his (Nigeria, Piccachu, Cups Stuffed, and I really like that track with Gucci, The Jungle too).

Just gave that J Stalin a spin, good shit. A bit behind on his recent output but I love him.
