Walter Hill, Last Man Standing, 1995
I really can't decide at times whether Bruce is just pretending to be a lousy actor or really is a lousy actor (more likely the latter), especially when deadpanning his way through laughable sub-Chandler voiceovers in this self-styled "film noir western", a bona fide remake of Yojimbo - Kurosawa actually gets credited - which never needed a remake in the first place (though A Fistful of Dollars ain't shabby as movies go). If you're curious there's a comparison of all three films here http://www.h2g2.com/approved_entry/A1161271. And is this really the same Walter Hill who gave us The Driver, 48 Hrs.,Warriors, Extreme Prejudice? Even the slomo shootouts (homage to Bloody Sam - I've never seen more bullets fly in a film, even The Wild Bunch) seem laboured and sloppy. As for Christopher Walken's "Irish" accent, enough said. A pleasant enough way to spend a mildly hungover New Year's Day afternoon, but not one I'll be returning to, I think.
