seems like some of you know where to find mix-tapes. when i was in highschool one of my most prized tapes, was a dj mix of all of the original bronx vs. queens bridge beef tracks. in chronological order i think. it was just an amazing historical document. unfortunately it was lost or stolen, or whathaveyou. anyway. anyone know of any similar collections out there?

I do not think that there has been a more expertly created rap album so far this year. All rappers' are eating molly now, but this album of Future made it into something beautiful. Rappers' will eventually (probably soon) burn out on taking ecstasy (or at least rapping about it), but Future has made permanent mark with this album even if more of mixtape stuff doesn't live up to it. He hosted that Welcome 2 Mollyworld, (http://www.livemixtapes.com/mixtapes/17 ... world.html) and was on a bunch of songs on it, but Pluto is far better. Molly is a hell of a drug, and I'm glad rapper's outside of the Bay Area are taking it, when it creates music like this.

Been feeling DC's Shy Glizzy a bit lately. His voice can kind of grate on me after extended periods of time, but he's dope. Scares the fuck out of me though.



I've been a huge fan of Sasha Go Hard since I heard her on DJ Kenn's "More Than Music" mixtape, and she seems to just be getting better and better. Both of her mixtapes "Glory Girl' and "Do U Know Who I Am?" are great. Some really good female rappers from the Chi right now, but Sasha is my favorite (and is the cutest). Psyched shes getting a lot of attention lately



Another really terrifying kid, but a good tape. Pretty much every song is the same song, but they are all dope. He makes Chief Keef seem like a kindergarden teacher or somethin (not hating I love Keef).

OK so I'm still listening to good kid, m.A.A.d city repeatedly and I feel safe in saying it is the best rap album I've heard in a long time. Whereas all the hyperbole after Kanye dropped My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (this generation's Sergeant Pepper, anyone?) smacked of desperation, I feel the praise is warranted here. Yeah, it's one worth delving into.

This tape has some heat on it, just ignore Shiest Millini (jesus he sucks). The Future track "Karate Chop" rules, so does the Rich Boys track "Back it Up" featuring him. Also, what an awesome cover.

On the old tip, I recently found this blogspot (people still use that?) with a bunch of old Memphis tapes, some of them I had been looking for for a while. The DJ Sound and DJ Squeeky tapes are essential. I've Spent the last 6 months or so beefing up my Memphis collection, which wasn't a scene I knew too much about before outside of the Hypnotized Minds camp and Tommy Wright III. There are some interesting parallells between Memphis and Chicago that upon finding got me hungry to find more, one example being the sampling of Paul Johnson's classic ghetto house track "Let Me See You Butterfly" on Lil Gin's "Shake Junt", where there is even a section in the song dedicated to the Chicago-born dance.

My problem with these types of sites, is that, since they give no information about the quality of the tapes, I tend to download only things by artists I know. This narrows what music I'm exposed to, but I've been burned quite often by bad artists uploaded on these type of sites solely 'cause their album only sold 3 copies or something.

What would you recommend outside of Three 6 Mafia related stuff?

Plus, sorry, but all this Drill shit is getting booooooooring. David Drake must be getting paid something for pushing this stuff. I really like that new Chief Keef joint where he auto-tones himself out into oblivion (They Know), but I just can't get excited about the rest of it. I hope these guys (the rappers) make some money off of it, before it implodes like every other rap trend.

I never said every tape on this blog was worth hearing (I haven't even listened to them all), and of course some of them will disappoint you. A lot of them are demo tapes, and of course you will have to use your own judgement.

Yeah, that Womack tape is pretty great, although I haven't listened to it in a while. I'll check out those others.

On drill, I mean trend like everybody copying Luger's sound last year or the year before or whenever that was. If drill isn't on that level, I would say its on the way. Keef gets radio play outside of Chicago, and I'm sure he has more in him. Which is all a good thing for the artists involved, but Luger's sound got boring eventually (or quickly, depending on your ears) and a lot of drill sounds the same to me.

I will not apologize to David Drake, 'cause of all these silly internet back-and-forths are funny, but I really didn't mean to step on your Chicago toes. There's a lot of good music coming out of Chicago, but since I don't live in Chicago I can only experience it through gatekeepers like Drake and whoever runs Fake Shore Drive.

Ah well, I intended what I wrote to be a slightly humorous quip. I guess I failed.

Ahh, naw I'm not salty (and i don't even live in chicago anymore actually). There is definitely a lot of bad stuff in that scene. There is a lot of talent in my eyes/ears in Chicago, but I am biased. Keefs album comes out on the 18th of this month I believe, and I'm looking forward to hearing it.
