We'll have a month to obsess over the records, and then he's on the road again. Lescalleetapollooza is about to be a travelling show.
Re: jason lescalleet
actually he's playing the Stone on July 8, we are hoping to have the Erst release by then, but it will be very close (and I'd say not super likely as of right now, looking more like just after).

Re: jason lescalleet
I'm glad to hear he's got a show lined up for the erst solo album. I'm looking forward to that release. He wrote me a couple days ago about a show in Atlanta in August. I'm not sure what the rest of the (mini?)tour looks like yet.

Re: jason lescalleet
I heard he's playing the Voice of the Valley festival in August. Anybody here going ?
Re: jason lescalleet
well there's the facebook hype about the new album, but i haven't read anything substantial about it. too soon? any reviews? is SAN a good place to start with this artist?
Re: jason lescalleet
I've only heard it once for the moment (with the mp3s ; CDs soon !), so it's pretty hard to say.mono tony wrote:is SAN a good place to start with this artist?
Considering also that he's covering such a wide field : you can get SAN, Love Me Two Times, The Breadwinner, but you'll have very different things in Electronic Music, or Mattresslessness or even in The Pilgrim (and so on).
A bad place to start would be "Red Room" with Jason Kahn, but almost everything is (at least) worth listening and a lot of things is at least very good... you'll find your own favs.
Re: jason lescalleet
Personally, I think it's a great place to start. The two CDs are very different, lots of stuff going on, it's very rich in detail and shows different aspects of Jason's work. Then you can see what you like, and come back for more recs.

Re: jason lescalleet
SAN is definitely a great place to start, though most of Jason's back catalogue is pretty fantastic. I'd highly recommend also checking out his two with Graham Lambkin ("The Breadwinner" and "Air Supply"), as well as his two with nmperign ("Love Me Two Times" and "Forlorn Green" [actually only with Greg Kelley]).
fyi: I don't think any reviews of SAN have popped up yet. I'm trying to have one written within a week. Also, it should be noted that Jason is doing a mini tour of the South East later this month. He'll be at Voice of the Valley on the 19th, then dates in Richmond, VA; Carrboro, NC; Asheville, NC; Columbia, SC; and finally Atlanta, GA. I don't have specifics about the non-Carrboro dates (and I believe he'll be touring elsewhere too), but here's the facebook page for the show in Carrboro (it's on 8/21):

Any idea what the venue is for the Greenfield show? Just ordered SAN through SquidCo.

Re: jason lescalleet
I just saw this on the Volcanic Tongue site today, I think it's the first non-FB mention of Songs About Nothing that I've seen.mono tony wrote:well there's the facebook hype about the new album, but i haven't read anything substantial about it. too soon? any reviews? is SAN a good place to start with this artist?
"Stunning double disc collection of mind-erasing loops, avant classical drone and minimal cold wave threat from Jason Lescallett, presented as a back-handed tribute to Big Black’s notorious 1992 album Songs About Fucking: Songs About Nothing is the sound of pure entropy, moving from ear-scalding feedback sculptures through nod-out minimal synth repetition through scrambled choral works and widescreen soundtrack drones. The first disc unfolds in a series of stately movements linked by a form of oblique progressive logic with an increasing atmosphere of all-out psychosis until it feels like you’re listening in on advanced surveillance electronics or experiments in sonic/psychological warfare (a quality which often marks out the most extreme Lescalleet recordings). The second disc consists of one massively extended track which expands on the ‘narrative’ feel of the first disc with the sounds of helicopter blades, distant cries, riot tones, hallucinatory/piercing upper register violence and huge blocks of eviscerated silence, with aspects of Masayoshi Urabe’s convulsive approach to orchestrating nada. A stunning release from Lescalleet, his best to date, and a set that demands to be explored repeatedly in depth. This is hardcore. Highly recommended."
I'll probably buy a copy directly from Lescalleet. This sounds promising.
Re: jason lescalleet
psyched/primed for the new one. there are more samples on the squidco site..
Re: jason lescalleet
on a trivial tip, just noticed the track (sub)title "tarnished copper" is a nod to a lyric on shellac's terraform (on the song titled "copper"), the lyric (chorus) being "copper... you'll never be gold"
Re: jason lescalleet
I posted this in IHP already, but in case anyone missed that, here is a video for the great opening track on 'Songs About Nothing', done I think by Aaron Dilloway (with help from Jason? not sure):

Re: jason lescalleet
loved the review
cam't wait to scrap togther a new order that will include Songs About Nothing
fwiw - I won't go to the Stone between May/June and Aug/Sept due to the heat - the last time I was there during those warmer months was the night that Jason played solo last SEPT and thankfully kept the inept AC unit running wheras it was turned off as it had to be for the Rowe/Wolff set that followed.
I was NEVER hotter in my life during that following set - so uncomfortable that I missed some great music that I would have attended for at least a couple of more nights during the AMPLIFY run....but even on slighly coolwer nights I was unwilling to bear the pain of the heat despite....you know the music I missed.
However, I have to say that the Lescalleet solo set was wonderful and I just took in the incredible sound which was on the cusp of pain to all my senses at times but always manageable....
I have seen him 3 times (first in a duo with Rowe - beyond the impossible) and then with Lambkin (kinder and gentler) and it has always been more than worthwhile.

Re: jason lescalleet
Playing Bristol in October! exciting.
Re: jason lescalleet
Can't wait for him to play this Wednesday with Aaron Dilloway at NTC.
In the meantime, this may seem dumb, but does anyone have a problem with the plastic sleeve that "The Pilgrim" comes in? I can't get the blue sleeve to fit back in it, at all.

Re: jason lescalleet
There was a positive review of the new record in the NYTimes the other day.
