Hah hah, yeah. It does stand out as a bit of a teenage track but there's some great stuff there. Void itself, partcularly.
That track is horrible, and what a stupid title. Rest of the album, not really impressed to be honest.

Agalloch - Marrow Of The Spirit

The more I listen to this album, the more I love it. To my ears it is simply too good. The quality of compositions, the complete departure from black metal while still sounding urgent and desperate, the diversity of styles and ideas for each track, the epic feel...

For those who are into the Conqueror/Revenge/Axis of Advance black death war-metal- up-your-ass shit, check out Diocletian if you haven't already. I've been listening to that a lot as I clean my apartment or write poetry or whatever and it rules. They're as batshit crazy when it comes to their (pseudo) ideology as any of that "walk the superion path" stuff, which at this point is kind of a bonus. In the spirit of stunted maturity I've even hung up their massive Doom Kult poster in my kitchen. So I can look at some demon sitting on pile of skulls while I eat my organic cereal. Booyah!

Item! The new Yob is also pretty good. I'm still coming to terms with it, but I'm definitely into the whole package. The vocals have always kind of been in the way for me, but I'm digging it. I waited for the vinyl so maybe I'm way behind.

Item! Saturnalia Temple is also really worth checking out for those into thee mighty Electric Wizard. It's a little more trippy, but buy the vinyl cuz the cover is worth the price of admission alone. Dennis Dread, the artist of said album, has a great blog worth checkin out here for those into horror movies, metal and metal/horror art. The fact that he does everything with ball point pen is really as metal as it comes as well. http://dennisdread.blogspot.com/

Item! And for more reading material the folks at The Left Hand Path (same dudes who did an alright K. Drumm interiew not too long back) have released their first issue of Chips and Beer 'zine which is pretty swell. Interviews with Negative Plane, and Benjamin Vierling are highlights. Some of more critically astute writing on the whole intersection of horror, white high tops and metal anywhere. And frankly it's nice to see a good metal zine once and a while. You can get it through 20 Buck Spin.

Listening to the last effort from Tom G. Warrior. Disliked it at first but now it's somehow growing. Maybe some of the heaviest and deepest guitar sound heard recently. Once again an HR Giger cover for a Celtic Frost related project.

I forgot too many things in this area. If I revised I would probalby throw out all the new wave nostalgia and add alters of Madness, and Slaughter of the Innocent. Maybe we should do this for the metal thread...
good idea. desert island metal picks.

(also: is slaughter of the innocents that repulsion track? or is that some album i've never heard of?)

Brain fart, I should have just written Horrified. Slaughter of the Innocent was the the name of the demo which, as far as I know, was released as Horrified. I think they made some changes to the mix or something, but it's basically the same thing.

I'll be thinking of some things for a desert island list, although I'm not sure it'll be 50.

I finally picked this up. It rules. I always passed this band up when they first came out. I was a fool. I can't put my finger on what it reminds me so much of.

Got the 2 most recent albums of Ulcerate some time ago. They're from New New Zealand.

Really heavy, complicated, chaotic and crushing death metal like Gorguts and Mitochondrion, some Neurosis too. No overt guitarwizary like Necrophagist or so (I don't like that.)

Image

By the way, that latest of Mitochondrion is also excellent. (Really bland cover art though.)

yeah the new ulcerate is really good. i heard it four or five times when it came out a couple months ago— i should throw it one again. with that type of stuff, though, i always wish, just once per album, they'd actually lock into some obvious groove/riff. it feels like they're building and building toward it but it never comes. just give us the dumb thing we want.

changed my mind completely. Destroyers of All totally satisfies. love every second of it. it's making a lot of end-of-the-year lists, but in my estimation, nothing is touching the disma album for best death metal of 2011.

I think it's been a good year for death metal-- Disma, Vastum, Mitochondrian, Ulcerate, Grave Ritual, Vanhelgd (edit, due to name butchery the first time), have all released good stuff... I still haven't heard the new Antediluvian, but I was listening to the EP on Nuclear War Now last night. Gnarly. It bodes well for the album.

Speaking of NZ bands like Ulcerate, Witchrist is really amazing, their album on Parastic, "Beheaded Ouroboros," is really badass blackend death fuzz. I think they share members with the great Diocletian. Probably one of my favorite things this year. Amazing vinyl presentation too. It's hard for me to justify dropping 20 bucks on an album, but this one was obviously worried over and it's a hefty, well put together lp.

Canada's Adversarial is also been getting some play round these parts. Pretty killer black death... Oh yeah, here's my desert island list of about 50 albums or so which I'm sure I'll continue to add to later as I know I'm forgetting a lot... I'm curious about all of yours:

Metallica "Kill em' all"
Sodom "obssessed by cruelty"
Carcass "Symphonies..." and "Necroticism..."
Sarcofago "I.N.R.I."
Mayhem "De..."
Entombed "Left Hand Path" and "Clandestine"
Deathspell Omega "si monumentum..."
Clandestine Blaze "Church of Atrocity"
Gorgoroth "Pentagram"
Grave "Into the Grave"
Bestial Warlust "Vegeance War..."
Dismember "Like an everflowing Stream"
Morbid Angel "Altars of Madness" and "Covenent"
Baphomet "The Dead should Inherit" (Yeah, not really that great, but I dig it for its lunkheadedness)
Immolation "Close to a World Below"
Darkthrone "A blaze in the Northern Sky" and "Transylvanian Hunger"
Bathory "S/t"
Napalm Death "Scum"
Electro Hippies "Play fast or don't" (probably pushing the metal thing here)
Rorschach "Remain Sedate" (yeah, hardcore but whatever)
Electric Wizard "Dopethrone"
Rainbow "Rising"
Sabbath "Heaven and Hell"
Mercyful Fate "Melissa"
Repulsion "Horrified"
Incantation "Onward to Golgatha" "Decimate Christendom"
Gorguts "From Wisdom to Hate"
Discordance Axis All
Assuck "Anti Capital"
Monster X all
Unleashed "Victory"
Funeral Mist "Salvation"
Katharsis "Worldwithoutend"
Autopsy "Severed Survival" and "Mental Funeral"
Teitanblood "Seven Chalices"
Beherit "Oath of The Black Blood" and "Drawing down the Moon"
Celtic Frost "Morbid Tales"
Corrupted "llenandos de gusanos"
Eyehategod "in the name of suffering"
Conqueror "War.Cult.Supremacy"
Blasphemy "Fallen Angel of Doom"
Deicide "Legion"
Death - "Scream..." and "Leprosy"
And for a more recent addition I would throw the Disma on there. But we'll see how it pans out in a year or two.

50 titles and not a single Slayer album ? That's not acceptable :D

I've never really dug Slayer. Reign in blood is fine and all but I'm just not really enthused; maybe there's some old baggage or something. Same with Kreator and Megadeth and Nuclear Assault and Anthrax and Testament. But that said, I have found myself fist pumping along with all of them on certain beer soaked nights ... Helloween as well. And Scorpions. Actually, maybe I'm revising the list right now. Sheeit.

Yes, the latest one. Apocalyptic, industrial, dark, very experimental, post black metal stuff. It's impressive.

I've just been listening to Celestial Lineage over and over. It's pretty much WITTR-by-numbers but it's perfectly suited to the weather we're having at the moment.
