Expand on what you mean by the phrase "cartoonish" please, otherwise I'm forced to conclude this is university-educated douchbag code for "emotionally earnest stuff that primitive proles find resonance in". Fuck you, dickwad, "Angel of Dead" is fucking seminal, and both Terminator X and KMFDM concur!

Fucking "Cartoon" as a term of contempt; like Winsor McCay, Thomas Nast, Charles Schulz, Robert Crumb and Larry Gonick aren't among the best that American culture has yielded!
but I've never had any interest in Megadeth whatsoever, even as a kid.
No offense, but do you actually play a musical instrument? 'Cause like, in my circle of adolescent guitar aspirants, Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman were rather legendary. Maybe if you're just a record-collecting canon-formation douchbag, Megadeth means nothing to you.

I said that Slayer holds up the best! as in they are my favorite out of the group! as in I LIKE THEM! so no, "cartoonish" was a term of COMPLEMENT because I like the stuff that's "emotionally earnest" in its extremeness! what the hell is wrong with you! I even like actual cartoons including all those guys you listed!

I was a prog rock nerd in middle/high school man. In fact (as i mentioned in my post) I have a lot of nostalgia for staying up late listening to Metallica and Iron Maiden on weekends with my friends; that's basically where my enjoyment of metal music comes from. I just prefer death metal, grindcore, etc for my metal listening now, thrash or NWOBHM don't do it for me anymore...

I was in a math rock band that was heavily influenced by metal of different types senior year of highschool / freshman in college: salotheband.bandcamp.com if you listen to that stuff my status as a former adolescent guitar aspirant should be obvious..... The bass player in that band loved Megadeth actually. I just never liked them at all, and most of my friends didn't; we had other interests. So yeah even as a teenage musician / music nerd Megadeth never meant anything to me personally, but I'm not mad if they meant a lot to someone and, like, Rush or something didn't.

I really don't know why you're so hostile or think I'm some elitist dude who thinks metal is for dumb babies or whatever. I'm sorry if it came off that way I guess...

Sorry; I'm just overly protective of those bands because I used to buy those tablature transcriptions and that was basically my model of guitar craftmanship. I think that was my first inkling that music could be about texture and dynamics rather than melody, harmony, and lyrics.

I'm sorry if I came across as some populist bullhorn who will go to the mat for anything that formed my taste in my adolescence.

P.S. I'm really not hostile. The Internet is a shitty media for conveying tone. I even love Abbey. (I just think he should issue more recordings by berlin artists. Like the Andrea Neumann/Bonnie Jones disc, for starters.

They should have done the record like Soba to Bara--separately recorded pieces overlayed in post.

(haven't heard it, actually. Probably never will)

Lou has always been a self-caricature, even back in the VU days. How seriously can anyone take the whole "transexual junky low-life" schtick from a Syracuse University educated English major? Personas in rock music have always been about fantasy, image, simulacra. The only difference is that in Lou's case, the formula gets repetitive over the course of a half century.

That's also why I think the comparison to Coltrane isn't quite right; guys like Coltrane are like skilled artisans. They're honing a craft. They're also great artists, but ultimately a significant amount of their artistry is also due to a certain kind of technical ability, like Leonardo da Vinci or Pablo Picasso. So you can't compare pop/rock music with jazz and improvised music. Guys like Peter Brötzmann and Keith Rowe have been basically honing their craft for a good half-century, rather than tinkering with some image. Since their work is not contingent upon the construction of some "persona", it can be appreciated on that sort of "excellent at what they do" level, whereas guys like Lou Reed or Iggy Pop are all about making some initial impact upon a pop landscape, which ultimately becomes tired when the landscape itself changes.
Oh, come on, as if songwriting isn't a craft.

Lou Reed is about more than just "making some initial impact upon a pop landscape" or "imagery".

Sharpest review from Metalhammer (with epic call to Laurie Anderson):

you should send your records to this guy (he understands the final atonal drone part of the record, and MMM)

The thing that worries me the most is that, in this shot, it almost looks like Lou is wearing a dress.

Lou Reed is beyond gender!!!
look at his earring in this very early VU photo (when Angus MacLise was still the drummer)
Image
From around 72 till 77 he lived with a transgender woman called Rachel
And earlier than that, when he was 14 his parents sent him for electroshock treatment
for being gay. He wrote Kill Your Sons about this:

Not sure of that, he calls the last Slayer & Megadeth albums "fantastic". There goes his credibility in my book.

He doesn't give much more arguments besides that he doesn't like the riffs and he doesn't like Lou's & (Kirk's) singing.

this is straight up b.s. in my opinion. songwriting definitely requires technical ability, but beyond that something isn't "better" just because it's technically more difficult or took longer to figure out how to do (considering the anti-virtuoso ethos of AMM etc. this is a weird thing to even be discussing in this forum!).

being excellent at creating a persona, or excellent at timing your "initial impact upon a pop landscape," is just as much a meaningful skill as playing sax real fast or knowing a million scales and being able to execute them, etc. (not that i think Lou Reed IS as "good" at what he does as Coltrane or Brotzmann are at what they are; but they have different sets of skills, goals, and interests and one is not in itself better than the other or even comparable).

I agree that image-making and pop songwriting are crafts, but it doesn't logically follow that they cannot be compared and evaluated. One might start by considering the relative value of their goals, for example, or the breadth and usefulness of their impact. I'm not going to do so, though, because I don't care.

As I read somewhere: it's basically a metalband jamming through typical riffs etc, with Lou Reed shouting absurd poetry over it. What's there not to love??
Ummm...everything?

I can't believe this is a real thing, I had never heard about it until this post.

I've listened to it thrice now, and I think it really is a good album, that is if you like Lou Reed ranting, and if you like metal riffs. I think the combination works. To me, it doesn't sound like a Metallica album at all. Sure, it has some flaws and some bits here and there that aren't interesting, but overall, it has a vibe a really like: I'm buying it.

FWIW, I'm seeing lots of favorable feedback about this, Aaron Dilloway was raving about it all day on his FB page today, so I think the title is probably inaccurate.

If the record is anywhere near as entertaining as this Chuck Klosterman skewering, I'm sure Shiksa;lkaasdpoiaps@ft, Aaron, and Doug won't be the only boosters.
