And of course Jon, noone listens (properly) to anything for six hours a day - more like two, three max, for me if I'm lucky. I reckon he (he? I'm assuming it's a he - somehow I can only imagine collectors of anything as guys.. women have more sense) would need more like 150 years. I did these silly calculations myself back in 07 when I "retired" (temporarily) from PT. Very depressing.
Anyway, this is not the thread for that. Nice to see those Beethoven Piano Sonatas on someone else's list. Can't imagine anyone enjoying Unami / Mattin's Attention though :)

The Pollini recording is my favorite, but I'm quite fond of the recent Schiff recording on ECM, and I've loved Brendel (his Beethoven and Schubert) and Schnabel for some time.

1. Chumbawamba & Credit To The Nation - Enough Is Enough
2. Madder Rose - Swim
3. Huggy Bear - Her Jazz
4. P.J.Harvey - Rid Of Me
5. Stereolab - French Disco
6. Voodoo Queens - Supermodel Superficial
7. Sebadoh - Soul And Fire
8. Breeders - Cannonball
9. Palace Brothers - Ohio River Boat Song
10. Eggs - Government Administrator

(erm, it's the top ten of John Peel's festive 50 for 1993 and it's my all-time top ten list because it has Eggs in it. I didn't know anyone else in England had even heard of Eggs. And that was a great song)

Oh, this is always fun.

01. Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back
02. Wu-Tang Clan - Enter The Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers
03. Can - Tago Mago
04. Chrome - Half Machine Lip Moves
05. Cabaret Voltaire - The Voice Of America
06. Einstürzende Neubauten - ½ Mensch
07. Pan Sonic - Kulma
08. Godflesh - Streetcleaner
09. Autechre - Confield
10. Whitehouse - Racket

Funny, no free improv there at all but these are quite possibly the ten records that have had the biggest impact on me.
Dan Warburton wrote:- noone listens (properly) to anything for six hours a day...
This is actually quite possible for someone who is both antisocial and unemployed. There was certainly a time in my life when I spent more than six hours every day properly listening. These days I probably get in two or three hours of proper listening on average (and a couple more of decidedly improper listening).

edit: That list - excepting #10 - is comprised of the staples of my childhood and adolescence. For contrast - and because I really love list-making - I'll indulge myself and do a list of ten that have been very inspirational in recent years:

01. Moniek Darge - Soundies
02. David Kirby - Cittacaura
03. Greg Davis & Jeph Jerman – Ku
04. Helena Gough - With What Remains
05. Tatsuya Nakatani - Abiogenesis
06. Wade Matthews / Stéphane Rives - Arethusa
07. Vanessa Rossetto - Dogs In English Porcelain
08. Birgit Ulher - Radio Silence No More
09. Sawako - Bitter Sweet
10. Cindytalk - Hold Everything Dear

Kate Bush..The Hounds of Love

Anton Webern.. The Complete Works

Xenakis.. Chamber Works 1955-1990

George Crumb.. Makrokosmos III

Buttholesurfers.. Creamcorn from the socket of Davis

King Crimson.. Larks Tongue in Aspic

Can.. Tago Mago

Miles Davis.. Agharta

P J Harvey.. Rid of Me

Derek Bailey.. Lot 74

But this is all old shit...if you came back in a couple of hours this list would be totally different..

Am I reading that right? You have more than one hundred thousand records / tapes / cds?
Yup, it's been pretty overwhelming for some time now.
Good to see the variety in the lists posted.
I hope F&B can get to listen to many of these using his Last.FM player.

Well, Rod, best of luck to you! I'm overwhelmed with barely five thousand (think that's about right - I've been thinning out the collection over the past year and can't be arsed to add them up) and thoroughly miserable at the prospect of probably going to the grave without being able to listen to most of them ever again. Meanwhile, you're right, fun thread

Richmond VA's finest. I remember that Festive 50 very well - that Chumbawamba disc got some pretty heavy airplay that Christmas. Think I can do without the Sebadoh though.

Tough one:

Miles Davis: Bitches Brew
AMM: Laminal
Amalgam: Wipe Out
Ornette Coleman: Beauty Is a Rare Thing
Paul Dunmall & Paul Rogers: Folks History
Esbjorn Svensson Trio: Leucocyte
Bobby Previte: Weather Clear Track Fast
Weather Report: Live in Tokyo
Joe Zawinul: Brown Street
Henry Threadgill/Air: Air Lore
Alex von Schlippenbach: Monk's Casino

Oops that's eleven. Oh well. Got to add:

Keith Rowe & John Tilbury: Duos For Doris
Atomic: Retrograde
Miles Davis: Cellar Door Sessions
Mujician: There Is No Going Back Now
Bobby Previte: Pan Atlantic
Cecil Taylor: Two T's For a Lovely T
Uri Caine: Gustav Mahler in Toblach
Herbie Nichols: Mosaic Complete Blue Note
Duke Ellington: Fargo Concert

So many more, plus The Beatles, Cream hey this is an impossible task. Jack Bruce Songs for a Tailor!

Funny, looking at my list if you count multiple disk sets there's way more than ten. But if pressed I just couldn't go wrong with any of the above.

That'd make my next ten, along with Dick Gaughan's Handful of Earth, Gruppo Folk Internazionale's Canti Anarchici di Pietro Gori, Alva Noto / Ryuichi Sakamoto's Vrioon, John Fahey's Blind Joe Death, George Lewis' Homage to Charles Parker, Maderna's Oboe Concertos, Webern's Chamber Music for Strings (Boulez), Rokia Traore's Bowmboi, and Such's The Issue at Hand.

That's 30.

Only ten? Being limited to a number like that is really good for forcing you to focus only on the stuff that you absolutely would not want to go without listening to.

In no particular order, since they're all equally essential:

1. Miles Davis - Kind of Blue

2. Gang of Four - Entertainment

3. Public Image Limited - Second Edition (or Metal Box, depending on whichever version you own)

4. Wayne Shorter - Juju

5. Miles Davis - Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel (Boxed sets count as one album right?)

6. John Coltrane - Complete Atlantic Recordings (Boxed sets still count, right?)

7. Bach, Brandenburg Concertos, as played by the Akademie für Alte Musik, Berlin

8. Morton Feldman, All Piano pieces, played by John Tilbury

9. AMM - Newfoundland

10. The Raincoats - The Raincoats
