Is there any way to download this? Streaming a 40 minute track doesn't really agree with me

take a small jack audio cable.
insert it into your computer's mic socket.
insert the other end in the headphones socket.
set volume to maximum
launch any audio recording sw
press record
play the stream until end
stop recording
save as mp3 (or other)
…
play later at any time

I've had this for a couple of days and I need to spend more time with it, but I thought I'd jot down my impressions-in-progress in case anyone else was also getting to know it - good to share impressions on this kind of thing I reckon.

I'm a big fan of Hecker and pretty interested in Meillassoux (if not by all the guys who get grouped together as speculative realists") but I'm not totally convinced by this. I'm yet to have a proper read of the texts, so this is an unfair and partial judgement, and I'll be glad to retract it if the texts shine some further light on it all, but from the sounds so far and what Meillassoux I've read, I think Sun Pandämonium and Acid in the Style of David Tudor actually make for better, more forceful musical illustrations of contingency/ "chronic" ontologies... I guess Hecker got involved in this because his music does seem to engage with these ideas, and actually I can't think of a better man for the job, but I wonder if the more literal focus on illustrating the ideas has taken some of the force out of the music. Weirdly, it feels quite orderly and polite for Hecker.

BUT that said I think Sun Pandämonium in particular is a VERY good record, and nobody wants their successes to follow them around like bad smells, so I feel a bit churlish making the comparison.

Also, I think the last track "Octave Chronics" is pretty great regardless of theoretical context.

my copy arrived today too, haven't gotten to listen though. when I first opened the package, I was convinced something must be broken inside the cd box.... was not expecting those little metal balls rolling around.

heh. Yeah - I'd spotted the balls on the packaging description, but I'd forgotten about them. Similarly I thought "ah no, looks like I'm going to have to return this". But no. Ballbearings. Of course!

I'm not big on the theoretical side of things. It'll probably be months before I touch the book and attempt to read any of that. But I'm on my second listen to the cd and I've got it cranked up.

So, I've gotta counter you and say this album, just as music, totally RULES. And I'm not even sure what you mean when you call it "polite." This is not music that lets itself get pushed around.

Speculative Solution blows Acid In The Style of David Tudor out of the water, no question. And, although Sun Pandämonium will always be very special to me, I think this has finally knocked it off it's pedestal as my favorite Hecker album.

Yeah, I think "polite" was not the word - I meant "polite, for hecker" though - kind of like saying "reflective, for an episode of Jackass".

But I had another listen since and I like it a lot more. Ironically I think I was too aware of the theory - the idea of discontinuity being as likely as stasis that came up in some of the discussion between Hecker, Mackay and Meillassoux around the piece. I heard bits towards the beginning of SS1 too much in the light of that. It felt a bit "block of sounds from patch1... block of sounds from patch 2... block of sounds from patch 3..." and I felt that was a little too literal a take on the ideas, and a bit unsatisfying. For me that first 4/5 mins feels a bit like a demonstration of the Iannis Xenakis Signature Preset Collection on the world's weirdest synth - impressive noises, but a bit uninvolving.

I still think it takes a few minutes before it gets into its stride (but actually not that long in the context of the whole thing), but crucially having listened some more, when it gets going I think it's pretty fantastic, involving and - essentially - vintage Hecker.
