Daniel Jones & Barry Chabala - Undercurrents
If anything, this is improving with age, to my ears... thanks to you both. So much going on so subtly.

4g (Keith Rowe, Oren Ambarchi, Christian Fennesz, Toshimaru Nakamura) - Cloud

On the first track, pretty flippin' cool so far! It's been awhile since I've listened to any EAI music, so wonderful to get back into it again.

Re: Now Playing
just finished listening to Blackfield, 'Welcome to my DNA' - not very good I'm afraid, at least to these ears. Where the second album was slightly better than the first, this third offering from Israel's Aviv Geffen and England's Steven Wilson (of Porcupine Tree, No-Man and other projects) doesn't come even close to the first album.
But then, as said, this might just be me with my changed and changing taste in music.

Intriguing and highly captivating, as everything I managed to get from Michael's music the last year or so. Especially "Asleep, street…" where a frequent induction to a sleeping, almost sedating state, always leeds to an unexpected musical event. However small that is. The mixing of obscure with obvious musical sources is ethereal.
I take it (by reading the website) that these two are mostly studio arrangements of pre-recorded sources. Any more info would be welcomed.
Sometimes I wonder how this music would be perceived if it was actually split in separate tracks. Maybe the sequence in itself would give stronger clues towards understanding the piece. Not a criticism though, and well done to all folks involved.

At high volume through loudspeakers. I'm thinking headphone listening would rob this one of impact.
could you tell us more about it? i'm pretty curious about this one.

Re: Now Playing
To my ears what's most interesting is the way the identity of the ingredients disappear. It's hard to say in many parts what a pure sax sound is here, what a synth sound is, what's a tape manipulation, etc. Your focus shifts from the means to the effect. It's all garbled up into cells of micro-rhythms that emerge and recede and denser passages of extended tones. (The rhythmic feel is what really grabs) and a huge range of frequencies, from pin-prick upper register stuff that almost doesn't seem to be there to a rich low-end.drip wrote:Matt Wuethrich wrote:

Re: Now Playing
hey, glad you are enjoying these. Close Constellations was mixed by Michael using instrument parts played by myself and greg (from scores) and electronic elements he created. With Asleep... katie porter and I spent a day in a studio recording the scored parts, which were then added to the piece by michael. i wouldn't call them 'constructions' as that implies to me the use of multiple samples to make a piece of music, ie: john wall (for instance). these are scored pieces which were 'put together' only because of logistics and sometimes multiple layers of live recording (in greg's instance mostly) and could be played live. Asleep has already and will be again at Amplify this year.bedouin wrote:![]()

Max Eastley / Evan Parker / Graham Halliwell / Mark Wastell - A Life Saved by a Spider and Two Doves (Another Timbre, 2008)
Love the group mind-meld on this one. Cover art's great as well.

Baha-ud-din Dagar - Rudra Veena (Music Today, 2006)
I could listen to the sound of the rudra veena all day. Just a huge range.
