i hate Ocora
Re: i hate Ocora
Heads up: three hard-to-find Ocora CDs: Sierra Leone, Burundi & Madagascar (Pays Antandroy) are available as a 3-CD set "Strings of Africa" at amazon.co.uk for GBP17: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASI ... oh_product
Re: i hate Ocora
Good thread, will definitely chase up some of these.
Regarding the distribution of Ocora, from what I hear, they're not the easiest label to distribute. They're like a seriously hardcore university press, they've got not idea about promoting the catalogue as a whole.
The government funding has created an astonishing body of work, but from what I understand they're pretty difficult people to deal with. They've probably got loads of OOP stuff sitting around in cupboards somewhere.

Re: i hate Ocora
Inspired by reading this thread again, I've added a new Ocora LP to my collection after some record shopping.

Re: i hate Ocora
I can't say I'm a fan because I've always found Lyrichord releases hard to get...(but then again I haven't searched them out..I think I need to correct that)Geoff wrote:Dohol, are you a fan of Lyrichord?Dohol wrote:Geoff wrote:Such a wonderful record label.

The bulk of my listening has been Ocora, King, Nonesuch Explorer, and Smithsonian Folkways..
And various other odd labels..

There is an excellent series of mexican lp issued by the mexican national enthropological archives or INAH. Runs to over 20 volumes.Geoff wrote:Inspired by reading this thread again, I've added a new Ocora LP to my collection after some record shopping.

Wow interesting, I've never seen any of those before. I don't expect that they would be too easy to find in Europe sadlyjpeatt wrote:There is an excellent series of mexican lp issued by the mexican national enthropological archives or INAH. Wouldn't expect so. I did find one in australia, but the other ones I have came from the US.Geoff wrote:Wow interesting, I've never seen any of those before. Another rule to live by with this stuff- any museum or university issued collection in this area is worth checking out, no matter how inoccous the subject matter seems, or whatever preconcieved notions you might have of the music of that area/ people.
Re: i hate Ocora

This is one of my favorites. Anyone interested in cumbia should definitely check this out...Bullerengue is kind of like pre-cumbia, and Pertrona Martinez was a master
Downloading the big 3LP anthology of Chadian music right now, will report back

This is another favorite, funana recorded in the 80s. For those that like accordions.
All of the Cape Verde releases are really nice
