Jessica Rylan - long slow changes
Wow, first mention I've heard of this one in a while. IIRC, Jessica told me that this one was her Radigue tribute.

If anyone wants one, I've still got 5 left, $6ppd.
Wow, I can't believe you still have any of those left. I'm probably biased, but that whole sequence of synth tapes she was doing around that time was really great.

For the record, I found that Rylan at amoeba records the other day, used (I think) and 4/100.

Thank you all for the Beethoven pointers.

The only one that gets recommendations both here and the other sources I've asked seems to be the Furtwangler Beyruth 1951.

I'm interested in the idea of the smaller orchestra too, though. I'll look into that also.

Thank you all also for the links.

You definitely do want to hear a modern orchestral version of the piece and you can't go wrong with Furtwangler (though as far as the Big Romantic Teutonic modern orchestral versions which I loved in my youth I think I went for the Karajan more often) and even better see it performed. I saw the Seattle Symphony perform the Ninth just a couple of years ago, long past my interest in said versions and it was a powerful experience. But having so many instruments double all the parts really smooths them out, you lose such things as hearing violins slide between notes, bowing sounds, a single horn rising above the sting section, in short individual voices. So discovering the varying degrees of HIP performance was really a revelation for me and allowed me to revisit pieces that while I still loved really didn't listen to anymore. They are all good, so enjoy what you enjoy and definitely check out many versions. I did a lot of my classical listening on records checked out from libraries, definitely a resource to consider in finding the versions that speak most to you.

Got that +3dB Cardew disc yet, Robert? Hope Santa comes through in time! Would love to hear your thoughts (or maybe you already posted them somewhere and I missed it).

It was this or the Phil Spector Christmas Album. I made the right choice.

Alas no. I've been waiting for Jon to get it, but even looking at other places (Forced et al) it doesn't appear to have hit North America yet. I suppose I could just order from Europe, but I figure I've waited this long...maybe I'll get the download to tide me over until it makes landfall. I did see that according to your review in PT that this would be your favorite release of the year, which is high praise indeed. Glad to see Colley kicked out of the top spot :)

hopefully soon, I don't know why those Norweigan labels (Sofa too) insist on doing all their distro through a local distro instead of themselves, no one else works like that. anyway, it really should be any day.

and my other Christmas present to myself along with the Marchetti box set (the beeping disc is apparently a mistake, Emanuele Carcano assures me) is a spanking brand new score of Treatise to replace my yellowing dog-eared photocopies. One of the new year's resolutions is to set about preparing a performance of it. Yippee-yay.

My Annual Gift Giving day present to myself is that Music for Merce set (which I'm more excited about then anything) but it won't be in my hands for a week or two.

As for Treatise what I've been meaning to get for ages is one of the original printings of the score. Peters photocopies are pretty low fidelity it turns out with a lot of extraneous "noise". Its pretty eye opening to compare the two scores side by side if you ever get the chance.

McPhee and Snyder are a great combo, but that one never grabbed me like Pieces of Light and Rotation did.

I guess it must be pretty exciting news to see a label of contemporary classical music releasing an album with these artists.
