at Cut and Splice, right? Keith Rowe was raving about this set also.

Really? I've got a recordings of that day of Cut-n-Splice (for Keith et al's Four Systems, which is pretty great) and I listened to his set but it was pretty unmemorable. I'll spin it again, but I wonder if it was one of those "had to be there" moments. Ah reading reviews this does seem to be the case:

This theatrical gesture was echoed later by Tetsuo Kogawa‘s compelling set, which began with at least five minutes of total silence as the Japanese pioneer of ‘radioart’ set out the ingredients for a simple radio device as if at a cookery demonstration, and proceeded to construct it, soldering iron and all. The simple sounds produced invited a tangible sense of wonder in the audience, serving as a kind of gentle reminder of why we might be so fascinated by radio in the first place.

I'll give it another listen anyway though.

Yeah that was about how I remembered it, but not without it's charm. I like that he works with radio feedback, which I used to do all the time. I had to quit though because in live performance I was always getting clobbered by real radio stations and my transmitter was completely swamped. Sounds like he gets a bit of that as well, though probably is playing deliberately with it. But also a very clean signal; bet he has a lot more powerful transmitter then I do The recording I have, which was recorded off a Resonance broadcast, also includes a fairly interesting interview with Kogawa in the recording. But hey don't take my word for it check it out yourself: YouSendIt (expires 12.12)

Yes, cut and splice

and yes, you did have to be there, watching radio waves manipulated with drops of water and small lumps of ferrite was amazing, but it was all about the performance, I'm sure that the Four Systems would work better as recorded music.
