Couldn't agree more. Sincere apologies if any offence caused on my part. Pursuing this ball of politically (in)correct fluff in this thread is doing a profound disservice to the memory of a great artist, whose work is no doubt admired and treasured by everyone posting on this board. So is misspelling her name, especially when Preview and Edit buttons allow posts to be corrected either before or after posting.

there's something a little odd about posthumous releases when the artist didn't feel comfortable with the medium of release during their lifetime. I have no doubt that whoever handles the Amacher estate will be totally respectful towards her work, but something about it strikes me a bit wrong anyway (not that any actual plans have been announced as far as I know, just saying).

Good point here. Yeah obviously all of Amacher's work is not necessarily fitted for CD release. Still her two discs on Tzadik haven't been put out against her will I assume? Does anybody know why/how she agreed to publish them by the way?

I'm under the impression that there might be loads of tapes sitting in some dusty basement, some of which may or may not be appropriate for a proper domestic release. Obviously digital transfer, mastering and all that would be key steps in preserving as much as possible the fidelity of the original pieces. I'm totally guessing here so it's more a personal fantasy than a formal wish. I was suggesting Pogus as they're good at this kind of things but other labels have proved to be outstanding as well in historical reissues (Sub Rosa, Edition RZ,...). Anyway let's see what'll happen.

as far as the Tzadik's go, i don't think it's against her will. it's also not the first music of hers to be released on CD. her music has been released on various compilations over the years.

The first Tzadik was compiled under duress when Zorn set a hard deadline (after she'd dragged her feet for many years), and she wasn't entirely satisfied with it. But she was seldom satisfied by anything. 'TEO!' she spent more time revising specifically for CD -- originally intended for Asphodel, it went to Tzadik after that label went under. But even if that one met her standard, 'TEO!' is one of the most site-dependent works and for me it's the least effective of any of her recordings for home listening. Still ok if you crank it loud enough, but it does not have the symphonic flow, detail, or the sense of gradual evolution that you got when she played live in the room, amplified.

Out of all the 60-120 minute stereo tapes of one of her concerts, several have to be good enough to warrant release. You could say that she's pretty much been playing the same piece all these years, though her sounds did evolve slowly through the years as she gradually introduced taped elements recorded on different electronic equipment, but she was aiming for the same effects so even as the ingredients changed, the effect & the structure stayed similar -- so I don't know how many archival releases we're going to need on CD / BluRay / whatever, maybe one from each decade, though if I had access I'd probably never get enough

I think a release of any concert from the late 70's / 80's is going to be enough for people to be able to recognize her as one of the true legends. She was the first explorer of a very different kind of music, and won't be the last once people even understand that this is an option. Even a room recording is convincing - maybe even especially a room recording, you can hear the physical nature of the sound in the room. (Naut Humon has a 12 channel multitrack of one of her performances, with all panning information printed to the tracks as she performed them. That's something at least. )

Milton, such good info! Maryanne has long been a musician I have been very curious about but the Tzadik disc never seemed to tell me enough about the live performances. A room recording would definitely be helpful, I hope one gets released.

i was hoping for some kind of documentation, a book with her writings, scores, concerts, etc.. i don't even know how many compositions she made.
a 5.1DVD with audio material would be amazing, but i guess it's just wishful thinking… it's sad that her work seems to be slipping into silence.
