Indonesian Music

Post by dave quam »

Whats good in Indonesia?

Any kind of music, folk, experimental, pop, hip hop, reggae whatever

Someone said something about experimental music coming out of Indonesia that I'd like to hear more of.

So far all i really know are:

VA - Folk And Pop Sounds Of Sumatra Vol. 1
Va - Indonesian Guitars
Idjah Hadidjah - West Java Tonggeret Sundanese Popular Music (so good thank you Linden)
some nonesuch Gamelan records

what else?

haven't heard it, but "Smithsonian Folkways" have 20 volume "Music of Indonesia" series.
I was going to be a neo-deconstructivist but mom wouldn't let me.

I have perhaps 30 gamelan CDs, and my favourite release is this one:

If anyone can refer me to some good Detty Kurnia (I love the track on Oceans of Sound), it'd be much appreciated. Most of what I've located on-line has been way too much on the typical SE Asian pop side of things for my taste. More like the O of S song would be great.

There is so much great traditional type music in the Smithsonian series (highlights for me are 'Night Music in Sumatra', 'South Sulawesi Strings') but, if you have a hankering for some pop, check out Benjamin Syueb.

Also for traditional recordings, check out the King Records World Music Library discs from there. One is called Music of Sasandu, which is this amazingly beautiful instrument and the other is the Rebab (Rebab and Female Singing of Central Javanese Gamelan) disc, which is equally stunning in sound. Javanese Gamelan is a lot mellower than Balinese gamelan and this disc is just dreamlike.

This guy has a bunch of Sueb's (Syueb, Sueb, I don't know--I see it spelled a mess of ways) videos on You Tube:

I'm quite love/hate with recorded gamelan (the couple of Nonesuch releases I've heard succeed very infrequently), but this is exceptional, off of Italian imprint Felmay:

I don't know a lot about it, but there's a syncretic style called Dangdut that's pretty popular in Indonesia. A quick search for it on youtube should turn up a host of videos.

http://madrotter.blogspot.com/

http://braingoreng.blogspot.com/

These two blogs share a lot of very rare music from Indonesia. Sadly Braingoreng stopped posting last February but the links still work ok. Madrotter is a Dutch guy based in Bandung (great Javanese city for music.) He's still actively posting and his blog is really something quite unique.

Sorry for the brevity of my 1st post. I'm a longtime lurker but reticent with postings.

That "Shocking, Shaking Days" LP of Indonesian psych/prog/funk on Now-Again was a total letdown...... after some of the other stuff they've done I was totally disappointed...... Just generic R'n'B tracks with some fuzzy guitars, nothing shocking, nothing shaking.......

I wayan Sadra is well worth checking out. A balinese musician/composer who lived in Solo on Java.

I had the hohour of working with him a few times. Unfortunately he passed away last month at the age of 57. A great loss.
May he rest in piece.

saw Rully Shabara and Wukir Suryadi at the Overground sub-festival in Melb last Sunday. Excellent mix of traditional song and non-western take on rock modes. photos here : http://www.messandnoise.com/galleries/4278353
