A great idea, this. I think I could have done the same thing with that Léandre / Ayler bash I just savaged in The Wire and PT.jon abbey wrote:I can give you a report on it without having been there or having heard from anyone who was (think of it as a Mattinesque take on concertgoing)
So why barely three dozen people showed is a mystery to me. Must have been a football match on telly.jon abbey wrote:"Last night's trio show at Les Instants Chavires was much anticipated by all.
No surprises there. But I sometimes wish he'd blow wild and dirty FMP style just for a few seconds, and give KD something to bite back at (of course, a few flicks of the finger on the keypad and the Mac would obliterate everything in its path, but it'd be a nice way to go)jon abbey wrote:Kevin Drumm rarely ventures to this part of the world (or anywhere outside of Chicago, really), and how he would reconcile his normal approach with that of Capece and Malfatti was something everyone was waiting to hear.
Well, it turned out that Malfatti's aesthetic dominated the proceedings

Not really - Drumm was the continuous element - paper thin drones and various little computer rustles - against which the two horns worked. And against each other. I mean, it wasn't exactly Stan Getz and JJ Johnson trading fours, but they were certainly working with each other's ideas. It wasn't chacun pour soi.jon abbey wrote:Drumm and Capece basically acted as colorists

..as if it isn't with anyone else's hahajon abbey wrote:as always with Radu's work, the focus on each sound becomes crucial
No, I didn't find that. It was the first time I'd seen LC live, and to be honest I rather prefer listening to what he does: seeing him stick cardboard tubes in the bell of his bass clarinet and then balance sheets of plastic and all kinds of stuff on top was rather distracting - but the end result sounded great.jon abbey wrote:and Drumm was up to the challenge as a longtime fan of Radu's aesthetic, with he and Lucio both adding their own tiny sounds as the set developed. Capece's sounds acted more in a directly supporting role to Radu's, whereas Kevin's were more in contrast
Word. But isn't that always the case? I feel there's very little ground to break any more in live performance of this kind of music - and, unlike Mattin and his crew (I imagine), I don't have a problem with that.jon abbey wrote:but all three combined for a very enjoyable if not groundbreaking night of music.
As I say, they did. Don't know if it would have been worth you crossing the Atlantic to see, Mark (the Rowe Tilbury gig before Xmas was though), but a very pleasant and satisfying evening of fine, carefully wrought music by three fine performers.jon abbey wrote:now if only the audience would learn to shut the hell up and listen!"
+ 1Dan Warburton wrote:Good stuff. The set with Capece and Malfatti on Wednesday was excellent.
Something like 40, including the staff. The audience was older than the usual folks in this place.Dan Warburton wrote:How many people were there, just as a matter of interest?
