Is this your employer, Mark? Or do you mean my station in the sense of affinity?

I didn't know you had a show.
Really sorry to read this, then.

Would there be any point in a letter writing campaign or petition?

i have to admit i don't really know. Rice has issued a public statement claiming the station was an underused resource and the money is better spent building a cafeteria. I think probably they won't be listening to any sort of reason, but I would like the university to receive each any every drop of the terrible publicity they deserve for this sort of decision-making. they've just built three new residence halls and a vaguely unassigned 'physics' building. now they are selling assets because there is some sort of downturn.

i hope every single student in each of those new residence halls is deeply shamed by this sale. that's really all i can say.

if anyone here is in Houston, though, there will be a meeting at the Rice student center at 7PM, for organizing protests and action. I don't know what will be discussed.

What do you mean here?

It's a huge drag. I spent 8.5 years there, it was a major part of my life while I was at Rice.

i'm not sure i could still get behind the sentiment of that previous post, but what was on my mind at the time was that the philosophy of ktru is largely responsible for leaving it susceptible to sale.

This is very sad stuff...I sorry Mark, I hope you win this fight..

Although I get a lot of my news from public radio, I still think it's a pernicious influence..It's like the McDonaldization of media..A standardized product..Everything they touch turns to brown granola..

The far end of the dial is becoming a very bleak place.

Damn...

The latest Signal To Noise's cover story is about this..in fact, it's a big chunk of the issue..

yeah. i wasn't interviewed for the article, but pete gershon did a really thorough job.

if anyone is interested in an update, ktru recently began broadcasting on second HD channel of another local station, KPFT. the license and transmitter transfer is not yet finalized, with the petition to deny filed by the Friend of KTRU (of which i am a charter member) currently under review by the FCC. the FCC has never blocked a transfer in situations of this sort, but they are so empowered and we are told we may have the best case ever submitted.

KUSF in san francisco is facing a depressingly similar situation right now as well.

WXYC is broadcasting KUSF right now.

http://wxyc.org/

"In an act of solidarity with the Save KUSF movement and the legions of KUSF 90.3FM supporters still in shock over the sudden silencing last month of San Francisco's beloved freeform radio station, Amoeba Music San Francisco will join forces with New Jersey's WFMU radio this Friday, February 18th, to host an all KUSF DJ live remote broadcast that will be on WFMU airwaves back... east as well as streaming online on WFMU.org. KUSF DJs spinning music sets during the 3 hour instore that begins at noon sharp will include Irwin (Sleeves on Hearts), Carolyn, Stereo Steve, Jantine B, Harry D (In The Soul Kitchen), and DJ Schmeejay, who was in the middle of his popular Tuesday morning show, Radiodrome, on the morning of January 18th when the plug (literally) was pulled on the 90.3FM transmitter. KZSU Stanford will simulcast the WFMU feed on both their website and on their airwaves at 90.1FM so folks in the Bay Area can tune in on their radios to hear the Amoeba in-store broadcast."
