I found Robert Erickson's "Sound Structure in Music" on Google Books..

http://books.google.com/books?id=t3j6_S ... &q&f=false

It's a work concerning timbre..(and since timbre seems to be the unifying thread in the musics we all like to discuss, I'd think it's an important book to study..)
“In a kind of middle-aged crisis, it dawned upon me that there was a possibility that music might not even be an art form.”

if you are really interested in digging for (and digging through), two articles I recall from my "education"

• Smalley, D. (1986), Spectro-morphology and Structuring Processes, in Emmerson, S. (ed.) The Language of Electroacoustic Music. London: Macmillan: 61-93.
• Smalley, D. (1997), Spectromorphology: Explaining sound-shapes, Organised Sound: Vol. 2, no. 2. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press: 107-126.

Glad you posted this. I'm looking forward to reading through it.

Thanks for the Robert Erickson link. That looks to be nearly exactly what I had in mind. I'll also be trying to track down those Dennis Smalley articles as well.

In line with suggestions of writings by composer's about their own work (Xenakis, Feldman etc.), Peter Ablinger's website has some fantastic texts on his own work that provide plenty of very rich food for thought: http://ablinger.mur.at/
