I'm trying to find examples of asymmetrical beats.. where the beat changes abruptly in sound and tempo. Two that come to mind are these, though the former is more like what I'm looking for:

Odd Future - Odd Toddlers
(I think this is just a Madlib beat, though, for Doom's "One Beer".. a little different here)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXWAXmTCAmA

Gang Starr - Speak Ya Clout
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jg-IOCXTYzM

Anyone think of other examples? thanks.

(hmph.. forgot how to embed video)

This thread is so dead but it shouldn't be because Odd Future is the most exciting shit out right now. Um, enough hyperbole check it out yourself... Tyler's Bastard and Earl - EARL (free Earl!) are the strongest in the bunch but it's all worth checking out. They're getting some press now, including in The Wire (word to Noz), but thus far it's been a DIY thing and reminiscent of punk. Has rap reached a punk stage now since we've got classic rap?

seems the Tyler download link is already dead. but thanks for this tip. Following Odd Future now...

I'd been up on some EARL before but didn't know where to look for more.

Cheers, glad y'all enjoy the Odd Future stuff too!

...and on a lighter tip.. E-40's son Issue is like 15 years old and is seriously fixated on Arizona iced tea and video games. If the California slacker/stoner vibe (I dunno if he even smokes, though, heh) doesn't bother you too much then you'll be rewarded with some pretty creative material that don't fit neatly into a specific genre. My kid really likes it too (and I can actually play it for him, unlike OFWGKTA).

again... the kid's only 15!
I be super super saiyin, ya'll be super super hatin'..

Whoa, neat. I was just getting my head around the fact that the producer Droop-E is E-40's son, didn't know he had another younger musical offspring. I look forward to checking this out today.

Ive had Droop-E on the brain recently since he put out this mini album made-up of Sade samples, called Blvck Diamond Life. It's got some nice moments (Loaded, especially).

Cousin Fik is related to E-40, too. 40 must really have pretty magical sperm. Not sure if he's a son/nephew/maybe a cousin...but his No Gravity mixtape was pretty good too, if you're into Bay Slaps. Droop-E, and especially iSSUE are a lot more out there.

That got me listening to some Sade again lately - just on the concept alone (have yet to listen to the Droop-E album). I did catch the Loaded video though. So this is what it's like to be E-40's son, not a bad gig...

hah oh man, E-40 has SO MANY RELATIVES that are bay area rappers/producers....

Turf Talk (cousin)
Droop-E (son)
The Issue (son)
Cousin Fik (nephew I think?)
B-Legit (cousin)
Suga T (sister)
D-Shot (brother)
B-Slimm(B-Legit's son)
Saint Charles (uncle...he was a mentor/manager during the Click days)

that's just off the top of my head

Lil B + Cormega... what?! I didn't see this coming...
http://hulkshare.com/9wq29q85gne4

Also, Waka Flocka - Flockaveli has been in steady rotation (good for going to war..er..commuting). I can never judge these projects by the radio because the single "No Hands" is terrible, delete that and it's a solid album. A really strong case for Flockaveli as an album is that it's mostly just Flocka and his main producer, Lex Luger, so it's more than just the patchwork that most rap albums have become (and which is why Rick Ross is where he is now - his beat selection goes against that trend and incidentally he's increased Lex Luger's currency by using Lex's BMF beat).

The Pitchfork review did a good job of describing Waka Flocka's appeal while Noz, who posts up the good shit first but tends to not do such a good job of arguing why some of this recent stuff has the appeal that it does, got the arguments twisted up too much when writing on Waka for Hip Hop DX.

When making a case for Waka, subject matter and lyrics should not really be in the equation. Exhibit A, all chaotic hype, interesting sonic content, and kinda meta as a bonus:

In general, it's a bad time for lyrical content (lots of cheap signifiers, lazy concepts) but interesting for sonic innovations w/r/t rap vocals (see Waka's adlibs, and adlibs in general over the past few years). Also, in another forum I thought it was interesting when someone pointed out that in the recent BET Hip Hop Awards cyphers the younger rap dudes tend to sound like they are talking over the beat, while the older rappers really ride the rhythm. That sums up some of what's happened to rapping - the voice isn't another drum anymore (ala Rakim, Kool G Rap and their rap-descendents) - and it's easy to see a lineage from Lil Wayne to Lil B (Nicki Minaj, too!) with the shift in focus to control over vocal tone and tics and not syncopated flow.

More OFWGKTA:

Mellowhype - Blackenedwhite

The first track, "Primo", kinda sums it up for me: amazing sonics, but a bit unsatisfying in length, development, theme. Still, when I first heard "Primo" was floored by the slow woozy synth pads. Second track, "Gun Sounds", bridges the gap between Clipse - "Grindin" and Waka Flocka Flame - "Luv Dem Gun Soundz". It is an overall fun listen and somehow reminds me of Slum Village too (um... casual misogyny, good rapping but not really as clever as it wants to be, beats are the star). The other standout for me is "Hell" for its Vince Guaraldi - Charlie Brown sample and for the bassline.
