Masahiko Okura
Hello all,
I just recently discovered this saxophonist/bass clarinetist/tubes manipulator.
As a saxophonist, I especially appreciate what he is doing.
I acquired Time Service yesterday. What other albums should I check out by him?

Re: Masahiko Okura
he doesn't have a very big discography, you can't go too wrong with any of the ones listed here under 'solo' or 'co-leader':
http://www.japanimprov.com/mokura/disco.html
he's also on a good chunk of the Chamber Music Concerts, Volume 1 box, also recommended:

and just as a fyi, I stock quite a few of those titles here:

Atami is my favorite: http://www.japanimprov.com/indies/hibari/atami.html
i also like the Manfred Werder composition 2006(1): http://www.japanimprov.com/indies/skiti/2006.html
not sure if either of them are very good showcases for Okura playing per se, just good albums in general.

Atami looks good.
Is there anywhere to acquire his CD-R Solo recording?

He plays in Otomo's New Jazz Orchestra, too (at least sometimes? Not sure). Good guy, good player.

True. He is on all of the ONJO recordings.faster wrote:He plays in Otomo's New Jazz Orchestra, too (at least sometimes? Not sure). Good guy, good player.
Re: Masahiko Okura
Unami (who runs Hibari) stopped selling these (and all the other CD-Rs he released) a few years ago, but ask me about it if you order from me, maybe I can sell you my copy if I can find it.FlyingWindows wrote:Atami looks good.

Re: Masahiko Okura
i saw this and immediately thought vacuum tubes, but i googled and saw him credited as playing 'bass tubes' ... so, what's a bass tube?FlyingWindows wrote:I just recently discovered this saxophonist/bass clarinetist/tubes manipulator.

Or as the above photographs depict, a bass clarinet neck and mouthpiece attached to a plastic tube.faster wrote:He puts a sax mouthpiece on a plastic tube.p_ano wrote:i saw this and immediately thought vacuum tubes, but i googled and saw him credited as playing 'bass tubes' ... so, what's a bass tube?FlyingWindows wrote:I just recently discovered this saxophonist/bass clarinetist/tubes manipulator.

Ah, right, that's it. It sounds pretty cool. Sometimes he spins the end of the tube around.

Re: Masahiko Okura
Good call on this guy - I was wondering if there had been a thread on here for him but haven't had the chance to stop by for too long lately. I recently got Time Service and his solo Hibari CD-r (can't remember where from but I'm sure glad I did!) and have been rediscovering him on a lot of CD's I own already.
I'm going to suggest this disc:

bject - Object 4 (locust 56)
as I think it's a really interesting listen, and fun! The Hibari bject disc is also very good but this one sits better with me I think.

My first and only exposure was here:

and failing that, here:
http://www.columbia.edu/cu/wkcr/archive ... c/p11.html
Must say, i was absolutely baffled by the silences at the time (2004) but it made a huge impression.

No work tomorrow to work today.
Re: Masahiko Okura
I liked Tanker, his record with Gunter Muller and Ami Yoshida.
Re: Masahiko Okura
Seconding Atami & object 4, excellent music in both.
Also the bject too.

Re: Masahiko Okura
Just listened to Rebuses.
I didn't find it all that interesting.
I think a Hautzinger/Okura duo would have been more successful.
Tanker will be my next listen.
(Jon, if you're reading, are you sharing Solo on Soulseek?)
