and that's what we're talking about here and trying to establish, there's certainly been extremely little written anywhere by anyone along said lines.

also, I'd say better suggestions than "download the ones with the cool names" are maybe look for ones with tracks or artists you like, or go for the lower chapter numbers.

Those are your suggestions. What was most enjoyable for me when getting into it was just grabbing the ones with the cool names. My suggestion would be to do that. People can either take that suggestion or not. My suggestion for the bare essentials are June 27th, Weed and Hennesey, and 3 In da Mornin. Though, I would still say, just grab the ones with the cool names. That's my opinion. I'm entitled to that. Other people can have there's and do whatever they want.

sure, and my opinion is that this specific opinion of yours adds nothing to the discussion and shouldn't have been posted, let alone defended repeatedly.

"3 In da Mornin"

which one? I think there are three, maybe more.

Parts 1 and 2, didn't know there was more than that.

Wow, seems strange you were accusing me of saying you didn't have a right to an opinion. I would not have defended my position over and over if you didn't attack it. If people kept posting their recs, I would have stopped and read them and not posted. However, when you tell me my posts are insulting and worthless, I'm going to defend them. The fact of the matter is I'm barely defending my recommendation, more that I have defending my right to say it. Also, if it is so unimportant, why do you keep commenting on it? Why do you give a shit if think and say the most enjoyable way to get into screw is by grabbing the mix tapes with the cool names?

because it's barely a 'position', Ben. go back and read your initial post and the two posts before it. it was implicitly if not explicitly insulting to my post, to O'Grady's post, and honestly to the Screw catalog as a whole IMO, although I'm sure you didn't mean it that way.

and stop with the free speech bullshit, you have every right to say what you want and I have every right to call you on it. you have no legs to stand on here, I don't know why you're still going with this.

if you want to actually add something to the thread, maybe you could tell us which of the 'cool names' you checked out actually turned out to be good.

Sorry to butt in here and spoil your little tête-à-tête, but I didn't get an answer to the question I posted above. Where can I DL some of this monumental oeuvre, since I'm not in a position to invest in several hundred CDs of someone whose work I hardly know?

they're pretty hard to buy even if you wanted to, only the one store in Houston sells them, and I'm not sure how they are on non in-person purchases. there is a guy who sells them on ebay.

anyway, pretty much all of it is here:

http://bottomofthemap.blogspot.com

start with Endonesia, and also DL UGK-One Day (the original, I mean) from somewhere to get the full effect. or, you know, pick a cool name.

We are going around in circles here. IMO these last posts should find there way to the dead letter office. I don't see how you could ever say my post was explicitly insulting to you or about you in any way. I meant it to be about me. It's not "free speech bullshit," although I am using that rhetoric. I'm just saying my statement is not really controversial or intense, so there is no need to tell me not to say it. Please tell me what is so wrong about saying I think there is a lot of screw out there, too much for me to dig through and pick the best, and my recommendation is to just find random ones and decide what you like. All I really wanted to say in my first post, is there are two ways to look at it: you can look through lists like this and other places and get that or you can just grab random ones and see what you like. I was basically trying to remove myself from the thread while still saying I love screw and everyone else should check him out and you dragged me into this really pointless and dumb debate. Frankly, I don't care. If I was a insulting, I apologize. I'm sure you and O'Grady know a lot about screw and have great suggestions to make. I didn't make my original post in direct reaction to yours, I didn't even realize the way that looked until you pointed it out. Basically, all I want to say is it's really enjoyable (more enjoyable for me) to just pick out one's with cool names. Can we end this now?

ok, Ben, we're cool. BUT...

this is absolutely not true. there are tons of just OK ones out there, I'd say well over fifty percent, and if Dan checks out a few of those first, there's a good chance he'll never check out anything past that.

That's a good point. There is a lot of average stuff. 50%... I don't know. No reason to argue over numbers though... I might be too much of a Screw partisan. Lot's of great places to start, Dan. Any record mentioned thus far is amazing and enough to get you hooked.

There's also a a number of his releases available on amazon (US), if anyone is looking to pick some of them up.

I'm not sure how many of the ones on Amazon were legally licensed, or what the exact deal is, but most of those tend to be comps of one kind or another. the real Screw releases are all double CD-Rs with artwork like this:

and subtitled Diary of the Originator with a Chapter #. obviously the first wave of releases were cassette tapes, but this is the series of legit CDs that is up somewhere in the 220s now, I think.

Newly obsessed listener, here. 'Grabbin Grain' was my first ever exposure to Screw, earlier today. Right then, the seed was sown.

^ Man, I've been watching far too much Daystar Televangelism. Always amusing. Their entire schtick revolves around convincing you to 'sow a seed' of $58, $1000 even, to reap a harvest of obedience.

Anyway, I've listened to ATWT and Codeine Fiend in their entirety, so far. The latter is turning out to be the consistent favorite, for now, in comparison, ha. I doubt I'll hear another track more pleasing for me than GG, though. Looking forward to the massive amounts of listening time required.
