Night Music

Over the course of the night that separates the 9th from the 10th of February, composer-musicians Jason Brogan (guitar), Sam Sfirri (melodica, piano) and Taylan Susam (clarinet) will take vigil in the relaxed, sympathetic setting of Diapason Gallery and incant the daybreak, performing pieces of their own composition and those by Wandelweiser composers such as Antoine Beuger, Michael Pisaro, Taku Sugimoto and Manfred Werder.

About

Jason Brogan is a composer, curator, performer and music theorist currently residing in Chicago, Illinois. He is curator of the concert series, Silent Music: 4'33'' and Beyond, and the online audio gallery of experimental music, calculations. His music is performed in the United States and abroad, at conferences and festivals and in smaller venues. It has been featured as part of the Dog Star Orchestra (Los Angeles), Konzerte in der Galerie Mark Mueller (Zürich), Nothing New? Understanding Newness in Medieval and Contemporary Music (University of Huddersfield), Experimental Music at the Ontological-Hysteric Theater (New York) and the above-mentioned Silent Music (Charleston); venues have included, among others, the 701 Center for Contemporary Art (Columbia), Café Oto (London), the Goethe-Institut Niedlerlande (Amsterdam), Heaven Gallery (Chicago), ISSUE Project Room (Brooklyn), Listen/Space (Brooklyn), Redux Contemporary Art Center (Charleston) and the California Institute of the Arts (Valencia). As a guitarist, he has performed many of his own works and those by Antoine Beuger, Jürg Frey, Alvin Lucier, Michael Pisaro, James Saunders, Taku Sugimoto and James Tenney. http://maltedmilk.org/brogan

Taylan Susam was born in 1986 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, to Turkish parents. He studies German linguistics and literature at the University of Amsterdam. His music has been performed throughout the USA, Europe and the Far East, mostly by musicians affiliated with the Wandelweiser group. In addition to his musical activities, he organizes literary events (lectures, discussions) for the Amsterdam-based poetry foundation and theatre Perdu. Recent notable projects include a collaboration with Antoine Beuger and the Austrian poet Oswald Egger, a 24-hour performance in Zurich with Manfred Werder and Stefan Thut and a new series in Perdu devoted to the presentation and on-site discussion of new works of art. Sam Sfirri composes and performs music. Last year, Sam composed and performed a piece of music using the transient characteristics of Charleston, South Carolina as material. He also attended Ostrava New Music Days 2009 where his piece for Callum Innes was performed by the Berlin‐based ensemble, Phosphor. This year, he will continue composing a collection of pieces entitled for Samuel Beckett and present a series of concerts featuring the music of composers including Antoine Beuger, Manfred Werder and Michael Pisaro.

Any chance you can post what compositions are going to be played?

Unfortunately, I can't at the moment. We plan to bring lots of scores (of solo, duo and trio music we've played or have been practicing) to the space and simply select a piece once another has ended. I'll try to post soon a list of the score "pool".
