I'm interested in those energy flows, which are, as you point out, perhaps contradictory. They have to deal with each other, like hree wild animals in the same cage, and I never know what's going to happen even after my Nth listen.

Pretty heavy on the Basque stuff there, too.

Only 2 records out of 8 on this list were made by Basque musicians, but I should have listed more actually, because a lot of exciting stuff is coming from this scene. I keep encountering old and new bands that are actually experimenting ! Mubles give a new name to 'fragmentation' and Hamaika is label of the year as far as I'm concerned.

For instance, I checked out Akauzazte which is on Miguel's best of 2009 list. First track ofthem I heard (on a radio show called 'La Gruta Del Auriculo,' you can listen here:http://www.archive.org/details/LaGrutaDelAurculo9122009) blew my mind.

Sorry, I do mean 'Contact' as an entire record... I always call it 'Circle', have no idea why! It's the first track that I have real problems with, I just can't get past it!

Thanks for the kind words about Loris. The name came from Patrick and Sarah initially, couldn't explain why... they just love all animals!

Funny, at one point Kevin and I talked about naming part (or all? don't remember) of ipsi sibi somnia fingunt "Loris." I think there's a Celtic band called "Slow Loris." Maybe that's why we switched to free improv. Can't remember.

There was a Jon Hassell track called "Slow Loris Versus Poison Snail" on the first Wire Tapper compilation, as I recall (1996?).

Anyway, you wouldn't expect people making music like this to call themselves Pit Bull, would you?

The song of akauzazte appears in the minute 27, but it´s from a old recording. the new album "akauzazte dank", will be avaliable to purchase in the next days via arto.artian, is a brutal mix between the early Swans and Tangerine Dream´s Zeit.

if there was only some kind of technology that allowed you to move past a track you had issues with, and focus on the other 3 tracks/80 minutes...

I spent a while playing it out of an audio editor first so I could watch the waveform as I jumped around and listened to various sections to study its compositional structure. And then I did give it a full straight listen about a week after that (though obviously not at 100% focused attention the whole time). Haven't gone back to it yet since but I'm still comfortable saying I think it's a very impressive piece of music.

Jon - keep an eye on that smiley ratio of yours there my boy...!

Anyway, that first track is such a statement and what we're talking about is a/the record as a whole. I can't entirely like a release if one track, and the longest one at that, is so difficult for me to listen to.

I do take your comments on board though... I do like the other three tracks a great deal more than 'Square' but on the whole it's a release I have an uncomfortale time with and don't pull out that often. Perhaps I'll have a breakthrough at some point...

Cool. Tons of things to look into, as I haven't heard a lot of these yet... I'm trying to think if I really listened to much from this year... I would rate the Rowe and Sachiko M "Contact" album as pretty high on the list; unfortunately haven't been able to grab the other Erstwhile albums released in 09 . I enjoyed the new Baroness record a lot, despite it being scoffed at by the kvlt. So far I think my favorite album was the Krebs/Davies disc on Another Timbre. But what else? The Cult Ritual EP on Youth Attack records is pretty awesome, and is a renewing force for my love of pessimistic hardcore (dunno if it's from 09 or not). I'm thinking "Cracklenob" by Halvorson/Wooley/Radding will probably be figuring pretty high in the coming months, but I need more time with it. Teitanblood's "Seven Chalices" is a massive work, probably some of the best black metal I've heard in a long, long time. I'd add Marduk's "Wormwood" to the fucked black metal list as well. I've been enjoying almost everything I've heard from Tony Malaby this year, but again, need more time. Fire in My Bones: Raw, Rare & Otherworldly African-American Gospel is an awesome compilation I've enjoyed from this year as well. Other than that, it's been mostly older records, and a lot of catch up with past favorites. Next year will probably be the same, as I simply can't keep up with how muchh EAI stuff is getting shot out there now. . . Lists like this definitely help.

It will no doubt scald the self-effacing Daniel Jones to be singled out here for his music in 2009, but tough shit. I've been thinking about a string of releases I've heard that have received many spins this past 6 months. Two are trios, two duos, all with Daniel contributing. They are disparate, and reveal his acute listening skills and careful sound placement whatever the project.
The duo with Barry Chabala [who merits his own shout outs for his run of fine release- Unter Eichen, An Unrhymed Chord, Undercurrents with Daniel, and The Shade & The Squint] is stellar, Tierce is bracing, Leaving Room is very good, and after a listen or two, the Loris release may be my favorite. So there. A real pleasure to get acquainted with Mr. Jones this year.
