the new Josef Anton Riedl double CD compilation on Edition RZ.
I just started this, and like most RZ double CDs, it's a 2 1/2 hour epic, so the jury is still out on the music within. but in an era of fading quality control standards, Edition RZ is a continued source of inspiration, both for their music and for their design. their design aesthetic is so simple, but somehow so captivating and attractive. the picture of the Riedl on the RZ site doesn't even come close to doing justice to the actual color of the package, which is a flourescent light red with silver writing.

Just discovered the music of Pierre Berthet via the Sub Rosa website. Instrument builder/inventor, percussionist, former Arnold Dreyblatt drummer, etc. Really great stuff.

Such silliness didn't survive ripping the envelope open. I love it, the Swedish contingent seem to keep things very down to earth. Not much lateral thinking going on, they kind of work more like in a band, where everyone has a distinct role to fill. Think I won't play it before the new year, it's been a time since objecthood in music hit home and once I'm face to face with the audio I'll forget about the object.

I'm finally having a computer I can watch DVDs with. Now playing is a Sonic Youth gig from 1985, back in the days when the only properly tuned pitched-instrument on stage was Kim Gordon's bass. And what a beauty she is, by the way.

Fantastic! I just can't believe some of it... definitely up there, for me, this year.
By the way, I've done all my CD shopping for the year and I'm not going to be getting anything new until 2010 so when is an acceptable time for lists to be made and announced? I always find them really interesting and useful...
