Bassani - The Garden of the Finzi-Continis

I just finished this. Quick review: The beginning was a bit slow for the first 40 pages (Part 1), roughly his early childhood; essential exposition yes, but not immediately gripping. After the relationships between the narrator and Micol / Alberto / Malnate are established, the story really begins to gain depth and traction, and by the end, is legitimately poignant and moving, esp for a book that is only 200 pages. Elegiac. Not a whole lot happens, but everything happens, as they say. Recommended. I'm looking forward to the film, which I've queued at the top. I hear its very good too.

Now on to another mid-century Italian classic. All hail William Weaver! (His translations are works of art in and of themselves.)

finally starting to work my way through all the Hammet novels. very straightforward writing with an ironic tinge in all the right places. great stuff.

I love Red Harvest.

i like all the descriptions of how angry Elihu Willsson always is:

"The old man was tired. His voice, when he profanely and somewhat long-windedly told me what he thought of my impudence in deciding what was best for him, barely shook the windows."

plus the self-deprecation is nice:

"It was a fairly long walk for a man who sneers at exercise."
"I was two pavements from my destination when somebody S-s-s-s-s'd at me.
I probably didn't jump twenty feet"

and the whole blood-simple idea is genius.

The Dain Curse:

finished this a couple days ago and, aside from a few inexplicably racist bits near the beginning, thought it was quite good.
gotta love Mickey Linehan:
"The red-head nurse was getting a load at the keyhole when i came back from feeding. I chased her."
"And took her place?" I asked, nodding at this dusty knees.
You couldn't embarrass Mickey. He said:
"Hell, no. She was at the other door, in the hall."

"[Mickey] always got a lot of fun out of acting like the other half of a half-wit."

i'll probably take a break from Hammett now to read Dahomey as It is.

Hi , thanks for answer on cinema I'm thinking about it.
I didn't like this one of hers very much . Do you know '' All Men are Mortal '' . This is astounding . Complete vertigo . And '' the Blood of Others'' good historical and political reflexion .
Of course Second Sex but quite heavy !
