I have it here, haven't heard it yet, but wanted to note that it was recorded in 2001-2002 and is just being released now, so not a new direction chronologically at least.

I just finished Parliament live in December 1978 - the first time I awarely listened to Parliament ever. The first 20 minutes were quite nice, but from then on, only little kept my interest awake. It's a nice sounding soundboard recording, and maybe not a good representation of what they can do. I don't know.

listen to their studio records, start with the old single disc Greatest Hits or Funkadelic-One Nation Under a Groove. if those don't move you, then Jack, you dead (to quote Louis Jordan).

That sounds like a good idea, since it basically was the repetitive on-stage vamping to various "clap your hands, yeah, stomp your feet"-kinda things which put me off after a while.
That must be great when being among the concert crowd, but not so much when having that on your earphones while standing in line for a chinese meal.

they were a fantastic live band, I didn't catch them until around 1990 but saw them do a four hour show in a small club in NJ where my friends and I were close enough to high five band members mid-show, but the live recordings I've heard haven't really captured it.
