I was a student of Ed's, happy to see his name pop up.
Re: Now Playing
oh wow... not to derail this thread but i'd love to hear how he was as a teacher. stumbled a few weeks ago across a copy of "some business recently transacted in the white world," which i thought to be one of the best books i've read in a while (and one of my favorite book covers). i've since been on a big dorn kick, making my way through his collected poems and now "by the sound." amazed i never heard of him before!MRS wrote:I was a student of Ed's, happy to see his name pop up.

Re: Now Playing
A) amazingly they've only ever done a handful of duo concerts, five as best they can remember, and I think it's safe to say that the houndstooth show showed all of us (radu/klaus/me) how strong that duo could be in an improvised setting. the goal was to make a CD that made us at least that happy and not settle for something less. it took us a few tries, but we did. but you can hear for yourself if you like (via preorder, also there are samples on the site, actual CDs out in a couple of weeks.)nicenick wrote:catching up on this thread now and just saw this record!jon abbey wrote:anyone who wants to preorder 'imaoto' or the other two new ersts (all three of which went to the plant today), I'd be happy to hook you up with CD-quality DLs that you can begin listening to immediately, which is what I did for Jesse.
A) very excited: hoping it's comparable to their great performance at houndstooth a while back
B) the cover is strangely similar to a very good book i picked up last week. here's the front, the back is the same but without any text:
B) interesting. Yuko's three panel design has a decidedly different impact from the single panel one, one of my favorite things about it.

see, then this sentence
represents to me pretty much everything that's wrong with a lot of improvisation (recorded or otherwise) at the momentjon abbey wrote: I think it's safe to say that the houndstooth one was the most successful and what they were trying to 'recreate' on this record.
don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's going to sound great. I love the sound of Radu's trombone, especially in improvised settings, and it in combination with sinewaves is a proven winner of a combination. It's just that if you're going to 'recreate' a previously 'successful' concert (successful why?) then you may as well think about the previous concert, analyse what you thought was successful, write it down, and play it as a composition. Essentially, if you're recreating something that has already happened, you're not really improvising, not enough to define the resultant performance primarily as 'improvisation' anyway. Recordings and performances are defined as improvisation far more often than they should be it seems.

Re: Now Playing
With all respect, Charon, that's way too reductive, as well as dualistic (the improvised/composed dualism).
But I'm out of discussions (pace Manafon) in which the participants haven't heard the music under discussion.

maybe it wasn't expressed in the right terms
I suppose it depends on what criteria they used to determine 'success'

Re: Now Playing
yeah, 'recreate' was a bad word, let's erase and pretend I never wrote that whole sentence, it was a bad explanation. your post is idiotic (particularly having not been at the concert or heard the record in question), but I'll take a good chunk of the blame for my inaccurate sentence, although I did put 'recreate' in quotes.
another try: the houndstooth show showed all of us (radu/klaus/me) how strong that duo could be in an improvised setting, the goal was to make a CD that made us at least that happy and not settle for something less. it took us a few tries, but we did.

naturally I disagree. Improvisation is a very important thing to me (as you know), and to see potential misuses of the term is a big concern.jon abbey wrote: your post is idiotic

Good thing someone out there is defending the honor of improvisation.
I listened to imaoto a few times--really good & not what I was expecting.
