Daniel Padden + Sarah Kenchington - the bellow switch

my favorite Padden of all I've heard... great sound world, and doesn't fall into the trap a lot of 'automated orchestras' fall into, that is, making neat instruments that play themselves, but put them to poor use.. I'm thinking Trimpin here, and at least one other guy whose name escapes me right now... not Pierre Bastien though.. someone from montreal... huh, whatever.

EDIT! there's singing on "slide into sleep" that I find a tad cloying..... which is my main problem with Padden ventures, when I have them (problems)

I'd be interested to see what you are comparing it with.

Really like this disc, there is so much energy flowing (especially in the loud passages), and the balance between electronic and field sounds is very beautiful.

If these are the supposed b-sides, I can't wait for the actual album, whenever that happens. Their best songs/brand of noisey VU-ish rock so far.

Eliane Radigue - Triptych

First listen. Very good, and quite different to other Radigue works from these days. At times it sounds like "field recordings" made in a windy afternoon at the Atlantic coast. Booklet with beautiful pictures of a young Eliane "at work".

could you guys talk a bit more about this one? how does one keep up with edition rz releases? label descriptions like this one (at the below link) are kinda useless. . .

there aren't very many of them, but it's true that they're not publicized very well.

they don't seem to be. . .. but i was more speaking to knowing which ones are any good or having any real info/context. do you just check them all out? they're kinda pricey. . .

yeah, they're very pricy, especially in dollars, and they're poorly distributed in the US (FE dropped them when the dollar got too low). I've been distributing some of their titles, but their prices limit how experimental I can be in terms of stocking lesser known artists (although I'm happy to special order anything from them, and will be getting some of these Kosks before too long).

I only heard the Kosk because RZ sent me a promo in my ErstDist order, I wrote a bit about it in my initial post in this thread. my experience, as I said before, is that the ones with that cover template are pretty much always satisfying, they seem to have very high quality standards for their main series.

i've never actually bought one due to price/availability, but as someone who doesn't dip his toes into modern classical music much RZ 1009 -1019 were really mind opening to me and i can't recommend them enough.

just noticed the Patrick Kosk disk is RZ 3005, wonder why the jump in catalogue numbers?

ah thanks, i had missed the earlier post.

yeah, they do seem to have quite high standards, and i guess a lot of them are better-known composers, but there's several i don't know - jakob ullman seems to be quite highly regarded, and i know basically nothing about him or his work.

Pax Nicholas and the Nettey Family-Na Teef Know De Road of Teef (Daptone)

my first listen, to see if the music is as good as the story behind the record:

"Convinced of his skills as a drummer and singer, in 1971 Fela Anikulapo Kuti made Nicholas Addo-Nettey a full member of Africa 70 on congas and backing vocals. While playing with Fela and recording on all his releases between 1971 and 1978, Nicholas always had his own thing going on the side. He released two solo LPs for the Tabansi Label with the Martin Brothers Band from Portharcort, Nigeria: Mind Your Own Business in 1971 and Na Teef Know De Road Of Teef in 1973. Na Teef... is a heavy afrofunk set, recorded with Africa 70 musicians and singers in Ginger Baker's highly equipped Lagos studio, where many of Fela's albums were also set to tape. Fela was not amused when he heard how strong the album was, reportedly telling Addo-Nettey "Don't you ever, EVER play it again!". And so it was; despite being a killer record, Na Teef… remained undercover for more than 30 years. The story would have ended there had it not been for Frank Gossner, a true vinyl digger who found a copy somewhere in West Africa, tracked down Nicholas in Berlin, and brought the album to the attention of Daptone Records."
