Patrick Kosk-Mondweiß (Edition RZ)

this was included as a promo with the package of other Edition RZ titles I received today for ErstDist. maybe it's partly because I'd never heard of Kosk and my expectations were minimal, but I'm quite enjoying this.

Kosk is a German composer born in 1951, and this is a collection of musique concrete pieces spanning his career (most are recent, but a few are older, one is from 1981), and the palette and use of space is nice. Edition RZ's main series (the ones that are designed in this template) seem to always be worthwhile to fantastic, great label.

Agreed, I was surprised by that one. Don't know a thing about Finnish electro-acoustic music, but it looks like Edition RZ released a kind of primer in 2004 featuring Kosk and others.

the music seems to serve tilbury's gestures, set 'em up, frame his figures, etc.

it sounds like a busy, oliver stone-esque (hyper-detailed) morton feldman musick to me. there's not a lot of space (deceptively), and it's a regular-breathing, constant-motion piece (track 1). it's insistent but simultaneously static, in that it's remained in one tonality/mood for ten minutes, now.

seventeen minutes in, i'm hearing some release. but it's receded back to a simmer (@19:30)

this is just for 'place/replace/represent.' i guess they're aware of the stasis. will track 2 open up?

No chemicals for me, just a Kit-kat (2-fingered) while I listen to a very lovely 3" cdr from 2007 by Benito Cereno (Tim Albro, Ian Fraser, Dustin Hurt, Jesse Kudler, Chandan Narayan). Perhaps it'd be even better with drugs, but it sounds great anyway.

no, I don't think I've heard that one yet (possibly I have and it made no impression?).

Have you heard the Karen Adams version of "The Viola in My Life" that CRI released in the early 90s? I loved that recording, it really seemed to breathe and kept the corners on the notes, if that makes any sense. There's always a danger of people smoothing Feldman out too much it seems.
