Fresh out of the shrink-wrap and I'm definitely digging this one. At first I thought: "Way too derivative of late-Atlantic through Impulse! period Trane." But now he's winning me over. I can certainly think of worse models to follow than the Classic Quartet.

Dynamics of the Impromptu is excellent (and it's a reissue). Hope you'll enjoy it.

the first issue had pretty bad sound quality, as I recall. I'd recommend the SME-Quintessence sessions with overlapping personnel from then as a much superior record, but Bailey's not on that.

Well, pretty much what I've heard of Bailey is the track "Aida", the "Music & Dance" CD, the Arch Duos CD with Evan Parker, and the track on that one David Sylvian CD. I liked the track from "Aida", I'll pick that release up at some point when and if it gets reissued. I felt that "Music & Dance" connected with me the most, because of the setting (at one point it starts raining and I hear him responding to the sound of the raindrops on the roof, almost playing a duet with the rain as the other improviser) and because it just felt like it had a lot of immediacy and drive/focus to the playing. I don't know if it's the most representative of his work or not (although from what I understand, his approach and vocabulary are pretty consistent from one release to the next, so I don't see why it wouldn't be as representative as anything else). But from what you say about the trio CD, I'm really looking forward to it.

With some nuance & flexibility according to the company kept, I think this is true.
He was famously receptive to playing invitations and seldom sounds like he's diverging from his "approach and vocabulary."
To my taste, he said yes to many a comer with less than spectacular results to show for it.
