Hot Dog Eating

Post by jon abbey »

not sure if this should go in IHE or here, but it is shown on ESPN...

anyway, I thought it should be noted that we truly are in a golden age of gluttony, as measured by the annual July 4 hot dog eating contest in Coney Island, the most prestigious competitive eating event of the year. this tournament had been held for decades and the world record was 25, until Kobayashi showed up in 2001 and doubled it with 50 (!).

it took other people six years to catch up, Kobayashi won six straight titles, until Joey Chestnut reclaimed the mustard belt for the US in 2007, forcing down 66 hot dogs in the 12 minute time limit. the last two years, these two have been pushing each other to even more disgusting heights. the contest was shortened to 10 minutes last year, but that didn't stop Chestnut from somehow cramming in 68 hot dogs yesterday to beat Kobayashi by 3 1/2.

so, in 2000, the alltime world record was 25 hot dogs in 12 minutes, and now it's 68 in 10 minutes. now that's progress!

Its funny that San Jose State has only two claims to popular fame:

Tommie Smith and John Carlos

and

Joey Chestnut

there are a couple of women who are on "the competitive eating circuit" right along with the men. this Korean-American one is the best, she weighs 98 pounds!!!!!!!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonya_Thomas

they showed the graphic during the show that she once ate more than 10 percent of her body weight in cheesecake in 9 minutes.

I think it would be great if the next 4th of July, after he wins at Coney Island, if he gave the black power salute with the black glove and all.

and yes, I do know a little too much about this, but all I do is watch the one hour show each year (and even that I fast forward in like 20 minutes). Yuko is into it also at least.

When I was leaving the 7 station and entering the Citi Field area a couple weeks ago, I heard them introducing Eric "Badlands" Booker on the PA, and knew exactly who that was before they told us.

It was apparently the regional qualifier for the Coney Island event, which is hilarious in and of itself. Imagine being a competitive eater who's not good enough to make it to the show. AKA, "a fat guy".

Oh, and Sonya Thomas eating cranberry sauce is the most disgusting thing I've seen in some time.

nice, Yuko says that Kobayashi has decided he'll move to the US so that he can practice with American hot dogs. THE BATTLE CONTINUES!

"To stay in shape, Sonya has one big meal a day, with lots of green vegetables and fresh fruit, and always avoids junk food."

"She only eats one very large meal a day, which takes several hours for her to complete. A typical post-work meal for her would be three large orders of fries, a chicken Whopper, 20 chicken tenders, and two 32-ounce diet soft drinks."

Gotta love wikipedia. I guess the sodas are the fresh fruit and the fries are the veggies.

PHILADELPHIA — Japanese eating champ Takeru Kobayashi won the Wing Bowl yesterday after polishing off a record 337 chicken wings in just 30 minutes.

“I could probably eat another 100 wings or so,” the six-time Nathan’s hot dog-eating champion said after his first Wing Bowl.

Kobayashi, who weighs 128 pounds, beat out reigning three-time wing champ Jonathan “Super” Squibb by 66 wings.
