for those into the heavy chaos of Anthem of the Sun. Listen to Mickey's shimmering cymbals in the first 40 seconds of The Other One (felt tips?), and the curdling scream at 9:12. I included "Mason's Children", which was recorded for Workingman's Dead, but it wasn't released on that album; played eighteen times in late-'69 and throughout '70. When they get it rolling, it's one of my favorite early songs. I'd love for a heavy crust band to do a cover, because it's perfectly within such possibilities.

A strange, maybe unfortunate recording that has Jerry and Bob low in the mix and Phil and Keith high in the mix. Phil and Keith are beautifully at the top of their games here (no exaggeration), but to have the gorgeous guitar tones almost non-existent is a real shame. It's a soundboard recording, so there is still PLENTY to enjoy here. The first Space Jam comes out of the "1.5" set of Phil and Ned, aka Seastones. This is one of my favorite Seastones, but most people don't care for that electronic workout.

John Butcher was interviewed last night on Benedict Drew's new radio programme "Unter" on Resonance FM. Here it is:

Butcher also plays a short piece or two in the studio. Topics include his background in music, his early influences (prog rock and South African ex-pats), his experiences playing jazz, hearing free improv initially on BBC Radio 3, his working relationships with Chris Burn, Phil Durrant and Polwechsel, details of his own playing methods, etc. The stream dropped for a minute or two (that's why there's a break in the files). I don't use YouSendIt very often, so let me know if there's a problem downloading or unzipping the files.

Xu Cheng plays a prepared (abused rather) tabletop acoustic guitar.
It's mostly the natural timbre of the guitar that comes through and to great effect.

i found myself pleasantly surprised to be getting super into patrick farmer's new online release at c+h:

i don't typically like unprocessed field recordings (or at least not over the course of a whole album), especially with such a limited palette, but this has been really engaging. there's a certain surface static dynamic, but there's just enough variation and richness to remind me of good quiet electro-acoustic music like (early) bernhard gunter and his descendants or maybe something like jeph jerman. works very well in the classic sense of ambient music - i start to not even notice it but then have a start when a track ends. also in nice AIFF format, with a surprising amount of heavy bass in a few tracks.
