John Cage's Organ2/ASLSP (as slowly as possible) will be played at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis, on the Wicks organ, every Thursday from April 30-September 24th.



Paul Jacobs came here once and performed a Messiaen organ marathon of 8 hours on the mighty Wicks.

haven't seen anything about the jandek band. it's not the usual improv-oriented crowd putting this together, either, so i'm not at all sure what to expect.

The one that I'm looking forward to right now is Steve Coleman's Five Elements at The Triple Door in Seattle on Sunday, April 5th (part of the Earshot Jazz Spring Series.) I've been a big fan of Coleman for years but have never heard him in live performance.

Hehe, nah, Pinnell's alter-ego is Olaf Oxleay.

I really don't know who Hocherz is. I'm curious, though, but more because Hankil told me he may be debuting a new instrument--jettisoning the clocks altogether.

Hocherz is (I think) Berlin based, and on the only disc I have of his is a duo with Goh Lee Kwang. I wrote this about it a month or two back:

After the clarity and precision of Topolo I played a disc called Live Actions - Berlin by the duo of Goh Lee Kwang and Olaf Hocherz, using the group name PM. On this release, four tracks recorded at three different live concerts capture GLK (as we know him by now!) playing mixer feedback and Hocherz (of whom I am completely unfamiliar) playing piezo. Assuming piezo is shorthand for piezoelectric, one then further assumes that Hocherz somehow uses the process of converting manual movement into electric sound. Whatever he does, he makes a kind of dirty, gritty electronic sound so similar to that made by GLK that I cannot tell them apart here. Live Actions - Berlin started nicely, some good use of white space between low volume splurges of noise. After a while though the sounds change very little, and it is just the tension (anger even?) held within these bursts of sound that hold the interest as the two musicians fold them around each other. The harsh unforgiving qualities of the sounds here do begin to test the listener after a while though. Shorn of the visual aspect of the gigs these recordings were taken from, the interplay here is tough to relate to as its never certain who is making what noise.

Oh and has Olaf been telling people he has been promoted to director level? I need to have words...
