I'm curious as to how you're able to say whether one particular performance of Treatise is good or not.. what do you base your value judgement on?
hmm, i asked the same question over at the Cardew thread.

Lacking any theoretical background on this matter (which i must say intrigues me quite a bit), I take it that the interpretation is purely a performer's ability to represent the treatise geometries into consistent musical scenarios. i.e this line will take me from here to there, while a circle will let me emphasize a situation, and that situation will open these possibilities, etc., etc..

Is the result interesting?
well, as always, de gustibus non est disputandum :-)
the treatise disc is of a similar line-up with Gregorio's Ellipsis (one of my few great Hat discs of recent years) - Gregorio/Holm/O'Rourke etc., so that helped quite a bit.

Haven't listened to this Treatise for ages, but I remember enjoying parts of it, not all. Any thoughts on the new Mode version yet? Jury still out here. I'm curious as to how you're able to say whether one particular performance of Treatise is good or not.. what do you base your value judgement on? (The "you" is plural, not just addressed at Jon btw).
What makes a "good" or "bad" performance? I find the version on disc 7 of the AMPLIFY box pretty uninteresting.. but maybe Keith Rowe thinks it's OK. So, who's right?
haven't heard the Mode yet, the Hat Art one is 1) allegedly the entire score done in two hours and 2) simply not very interesting music, it sounds like that Chicago crew would sound just playing anything (as bedouin kind of points out, they did some other Hat Art discs around then, all reasonably similar sounding), and they're not especially interesting musicians IMO. I personally could care less about how faithful classical renditions are, I just care about the results (within the tiny, tiny area of classical music I care about).

as for the Seven Guitars, that's one of my favorite discs in the box and has been since it came out. I was just thinking recently how amazing it was to get those seven guys together (Rowe/Otomo/Toshi/Sugimoto/Akiyama/Stangl/Ambarchi).

I don't know shit about Treatise, even as I am reading through the many online resources/links that try to explicate it's nature and intent (Hatta's guide on his Spiral Cage blog is very useful).
But I know Seven Guitars is strong music, with an improbably strong ensemble making it.
I share Dan's curiosity about how you evaluate the fidelity of a work so open to "instant composition" as Treatise. Aside from, as Jon says, the results being engaging.

If the Treatise discussion develops any further, it merits a dedicated thread. Or is there one already?

i have yet to hear a performance of treatise that produced music as satisfying as the experinece of flipping through the score itself, appreciating the piece as visual art. there are some i like quite a bit-- the amm from combine + laminates for one, but when i'm listening to it, i'm listening to amm and not treatise, really.

Henry Cow 40th anniversary box (all 10 volumes)

I'm currently not really in a Henry Cow listening modus, but when I am again sometime, I'll be in heaven :D)
(I understand this is limited, so didn't want to hesitate getting it, nevertheless)

Some of that material has been circulating as fan-taped radiobroadcasts for years, but I expect these now official issues to sound better.
