what are you listening to? a second wave

Harris Newman - Decorated
didn't give it much time when it came out and haven't tried it since. listening to it now, more than a year later, yes, it even might be his best.

Phantom Limb & Bison [evolving ear]
came to me thanks to a happy accident & ended up liking it much more than its discription would lead me to believe. nice slow schorching sounds, with a rock-ish colour but really enjoyable nonetheless

need to get that Mary Halvorson Trio disc btw

Experimental music should be something that suggests a way of organizing your thinking, your attitude toward the world, which suggests that the world could be different.

A minute ago: Rowe/Unami - Erstlive. I need to hear this another couple of times, I think I just got the top layer of what was going on.
now: Chicago Sound Map - Olivia Block's piece.

Britney Spears - Circus (Jive)
Nothing as wonderful as 'Toxic' but still a couple great tracks such as 'Mannequin' or 'Lace And Leather' which sound as if they were composed by Prince, like a cross between Lovesexy for the guitar licks, Love Symbol for the 808.
The production work on 'Mannekin' is especially impressive, with its backing vocals turning into sirens and its synth links. Rob Knox did a great job on that one, it would have suited Morris Day & The Time just fine.
which led me to put this long-overlooked album on:

Prince - Graffiti Bridge (Warner Bros)
just to hear this great duo with George Clinton: 'We Can Funk', but I also re-discovered The Time's 'Release It'; 'The Question Of U'; 'Joy In Repetition'... not enough to fill a double-album indeed, but fond memories nonetheless. I even remembered going to the only cinema that played the movie with my folks when I was 10...

Prince - Lovesexy(Warner Bros)
Probably my favourite Prince album ever, crazy production from start to finish. The 9 tracks are flawless. It's the album he decided to release instead of the Black album, and it's mind-blowing. I have never heard a record with that sound, managing to be perfect without feeling cold. Every sound is necessary and it must be listened to many times before you can break the surface of the production and understand what's going on, like the best 'experimental' music.

Prince - New Power Soul (NPG records)
A 'minor' album from the late 90's which has great moments, such as the hard jazz 'Mad Sex' with its enormous bass, or 'The One' a perfect mix between house and funk which IMHO should have been a huge dancefloor hit.

Each of my 196 students is probably listening to that album right now, although I must say some are quite angry at the 'Stress' video (http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=GsmzNB_eXek) because they consider it as racist. Furthermore, it was done by Romain Gavras, son of the famous director Costa Gavras, and they don't seem to enjoy nepotism when it means exploiting their lives for the sake of a bourgeois band.tadk wrote:

Man, you French guys are so cute--I guess Prince is like Jerry Lewis or Woody Allen or something
I like Prince's dancing (and production on a couple songs) but the music always seemed decidedly un-funky to me. Like he has a tiny white man trapped inside his tiny white body. Wait a second

completely agreed, I'm realizing recently just how similar/overlapping our aesthetics are (you and me, I mean, as I told you recently). he's supposedly a great hoops player at least, but I've never been a fan of his music, 'standing on the verge of getting it on' and pretty much never doing so.faster wrote:I like Prince's dancing (and production on a couple songs) but the music always seemed decidedly un-funky to me.
